Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings Minneapolis

Every year around September, a weird phenomenon happens in Minneapolis. People are transformed, mimicking the change of leaves with the coming of the fall season.

But instead of brown and red, we turn purple and gold.

The Minnesota Vikings are a National Football League team that plays their games in Minneapolis at the Mall of America Field at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. That might be a mouthful to say, but the only real thing you'll ever have to yell is SKOL VIKINGS, which is the official cheer of tailgaters and fans in the stands.

The Vikings play 16 games each year in the always-tough NFC North division, matching up against the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. The team has been in the NFL for more than 50 years, and has played in four Super Bowls in that time span.

When you visit Minneapolis, make sure you block off Sunday on your calendar. You wonít want to miss out on Vikings football.

Fun Facts:

  • The Vikings' Alan Page is a NFL Hall of Famer AND a justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
  • The Vikings are building a new state-of-the-art stadium, set to open in 2016.
  • The Vikings joined the NFL in 1960, but the first professional team was the Minneapolis Marines/Red Jackets, an NFL team that played intermittently in the 1920s-30s.
  • The Vikings are also one of only six NFL teams to win at least 15 games during the regular season.
  • The Vikings have made the playoffs 27 times and have played in 46 playoff games, the third most in the league.
  • During home games at the Metrodome, the Vikings Gjallarhorn is loudly played and sounds often after the team has made a big play, gets a first down, or scores a touchdown. The horn's sound is in the interval of a Minor sixth in Western music.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves Minneapolis

It's no secret that a Minnesota winter gets a tad bit chilly. So, because we're huge sports enthusiasts here in Minneapolis (one of the only cities with five pro sports teams) we need to move our fanatic sports passion indoors.

Enter the Timberwolves.

The Minnesota Timberwolves (or Wolves, as those who are anti-syllables like to say) are a National Basketball Association team that plays their games in downtown Minneapolis at Target Center. The Wolves play from November all the way to April, which comprises 82 games in that stretch (with 41 of those played in Target Center).

Emphatic dunks. No-look passes that feel like optical illusions. The howl of the crowd after a deep three-pointer. If you're looking for an electric atmosphere filled with abnormally tall and athletic men throwing an orange sphere into a designated cylinder, than you wonít find anything else like this on your visit to Minneapolis.

Fun Facts:

  • The Wolves made the playoffs eight consecutive times from 1997 to 2004.
  • NBA basketball returned to the Twin Cities in 1989 for the first time since the Minneapolis Lakers 1986 departed for Los Angeles in 1960.
  • In , the franchise conducted a "name the team" contest and eventually selected two finalists: "Timberwolves" and "Polars".

Minnesota Wild

Minnesota Wild

Hockey and Minnesota; we'd say it goes together like peanut butter and jelly, but that would be a grievous insult to how synonymous this sport is to this area.

So naturally, we're going to have a team. And that team is the Minnesota Wild.

The Minnesota Wild is a professional ice hockey team based in St. Paul and play in the Xcel Energy Center. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League.

If you think you know hockey because youíve seen it on TV, then allow us to politely shatter your perception of the sport.

The stadium is rocking. The atmosphere is electric. The play is fast-paced. If you sit close enough to the action, you can almost feel the shattering force of a player getting checked into the boards. And when the Wild score...the stadium absolutely erupts. Itís three periods of adrenaline-inducing excitement.

Come watch hockey where the sport is the culture. Go wild for the Wild this winter.

Fun Facts:

  • Minnesota was actually hockeyless for seven years after the Stars moved to Dallas, until the Wild played their first game in 2000.
  • The six finalist team names for the new NHL franchise were Blue Ox, Freeze, Northern Lights, Voyageurs, White Bears, and Wild.
  • The logo is an optical illusion that depicts both an environmental landscape and the silhouette of a wild animal.
  • In the 2012 offseason, the Wild signed unrestricted free-agent winger Zach Parise, a Twin Cities native, and defenceman Ryan Suter to identical 13-year, $98 million contracts.

Minnesota Twins

Minnesota Twins Minneapolis

"The #1 Baseball Stadium Experience in North America." -ESPN, 2010

Now, when the extremely-intelligent folks at ESPN say your stadium is the best one on an entire continent, we tend to stop and pay attention.

And, coincidentally enough, a very talented baseball team just so happens to play IN that beautiful stadium.

The Minnesota Twins are a Major League Baseball team that plays their games in Minneapolis at the aforementioned Target Field. If youíre here between April and September then you too can take part in the best baseball experience in North America.

The Twins play 162 games each year (81 at home), with a majority of those pitting them against the rest of the AL Central Division, which comprises the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals.

So what makes the experience so impressive? How about outdoor baseball in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, spectacular views no matter where you sit, delicious food (Bacon Sloppy Joe, Walleye Skewer and Porkchop on a Stick, to name a few) and a consistently-great ball team all in one place.

If you want baseball at its finest, make sure your visit to Minneapolis includes a Twins game.

Fun Facts:

  • The team was founded in Kansas City in 1894 as the Kansas City Blues of the Western League.
  • Target Field was awarded LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, only the second LEED-certified professional sports stadium in the United States
  • The popular left-field Budweiser roof deck features mostly standing room and the only bonfire in the Majors.
  • The limestone used in much of the stadium is from Kasota, near Mankato.
  • A large "Golden Glove" sits in the plaza in recognition of all Twins players to win the Gold Glove Award. The statue can be sat on and is a popular photo attraction. It is located exactly 520 feet (160 m) from home plate; the distance of Harmon Killebrew's longest homerun at Met Stadium.

Minnesota Lynx Minneapolis

World Champions has a nice ring to it, doesnít it?

Well it seems to fit the Minnesota Lynx just fine.

The Minnesota Lynx are a Women's National Basketball Association team that plays their games in Minneapolis at Target Center (also the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves). The Lynx play in the Western Conference, but "play" is a much nicer way of saying"dominate"; the Lynx are one of the most talented teams in the nation.

And it's no surprise that the Lynx have this level of success. Anchored by college basketball MVPs, All-Stars and Olympians, the Lynx play at a level that youíve never seen before.

Talented. Fearless. Hungry. Minnesota Lynx basketball is a can't-miss while in Minneapolis.

Fun Facts:

  • In 2011, the Lynx had a winning percentage of .794! That's the 7th best percentage in the history of the league.
  • The Lynx also won nine games in a row in 2011, which is the 4th longest winning streak ever in the WNBA.
  • "Los Lynx" is the unofficial rallying cry of the Minnesota Lynx.
