The holiday theater scene in Minneapolis is bustling with classics like The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol, but also those unique gems you may not find elsewhere. And this year you can enjoy many of them from virtually from the comfort of your home! From shows that push the limits to family-friendly traditions, theater and musical performances are all the rage in Minneapolis during the holidays. Check out the must-see shows of the season.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, Kat Perkins is bringing joy in the form of musical performances to neighborhoods around the Twin Cities Metro and surrounding areas! With her current schedule of large concerts and public events on hold, Kat and her acoustic, 2-3 person band are bringing their fully equipped mobile stage to your curbside!
In order to keep everyone safe, Kat and her team are committed to follow the guidelines of social distancing and enforce everyone in the audience to do the same. All patrons must enjoy the live music from the CDC regulations of staying 6 feet apart.

A virtual holiday mash-up event for the entire family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a contemporary re-imagination of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, sets out on a another national tour following the success of previous sold-out tours.This evening-length production is performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, DJ and violinist. Through the spells cast by the mysterious Drosselmeyer, Maria-Clara and her Nutcracker prince, travel back in time to the moment when her parents first meet in a nightclub. Digital scenery transforms E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story of sugarplums into 1980s Brooklyn. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, artistic director of the Brooklyn based theatrical hip-hop dance company Decadancetheatre, The Hip Hop Nutcracker celebrates love, community and the magic of New Year’s Eve. It was adapted to contemporary New York City by Mike Fitelson, executive director of United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA) and includes hip-hop interludes remixed and reimagined by DJ Boo as well as an on-stage electric violinist.
Upon purchasing a General Admission or VIP ticket, you will receive an email with instructions on how to login to the performance. On the day of the show, follow those instructions and you will be allowed entry when the performance is ready to begin.

All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, Theater Latté Da's award-winning docu-musical premieres on PBS across the country on Friday, November 27th. Presented by the WNET Group, the special will be available to stream beginning Tuesday, December 15 at pbs.org and the PBS Video app.
Out of the violence comes a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht,” thus, beginning an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music and peace. A remarkable true story told in the words of the men who lived it, the docu-musical All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 relives the moment when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate the holiday together during World War I.
Filmed at the historic Ritz Theater in NE Minneapolis, the production offers a look behind the camera with 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage including interviews with the docu-musical's creator, Theater Latté Da Founding Artistic Director Peter Rothstein, and members of the cast and creative team. Audiences will learn more about the historic moment in history, as well as how music, costumes and lighting bring to life the award-winning production.

From The Producers of It’s A Wonderful Life comes a new Holiday experience for 2020! A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play Adapted For the Stage by Joe Landry, Music by Kevin Connors. Private tables, with maximum seating of 6 per table. Seating will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the show, and guests are required to wear a mask while inside the property. Guests may temporarily remove masks while eating or drinking.

This original jazz adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol will draw us into the holiday season in this year of ongoing challenges. Featuring all original music by Doug Haining, engaging lyrics by Charmin Michelle and Doug Haining with the narration written by Maryann Sullivan.
A Copasetic Christmas Carol tells Dicken's story using a suite of jazz compositions with "hep cat" lyrics and narration. This show will be recorded at the Dakota with only the performers and essential technical staff on premises. This production runs slightly over an hour and will be the perfect way to escape this COVID-regulated world with friends and family in a safe home environment.

Robert Robinson returns to the Dakota stage to perform favorite festive and reflective songs of the season. A treasured member of the Twin Cities community, he has played Prince’s birthday party, opened for Aretha Franklin, and performed with artists including Jermaine Jackson, Kenny Loggins, Barry Manilow, and the Sounds of Blackness.

Grammy–nominated songwriter and piano sensation Jim Brickman will be taking the nation by storm this holiday season with the Comfort & Joy at Home 2020 Virtual Tour. A portion of each ticket purchased to this live event will benefit Hennepin Theatre Trust’s nonprofit mission. Fans and their families can enjoy this unique virtual concert experience from the comfort of home, while supporting the Trust during this challenging time.

In Lessons and Carols for Our Time, Cantus offers a contemporary take on a beloved British Christmas tradition elevated by the Choir of King’s College at the University of Cambridge. Weaving together poetry and song, the program draws upon such classic carols as “Silent Night” and “A La Nanita Nana,” as well as modern works by Abbie Betinis and Saunder Choi. The concert will also feature Franz Biebl’s stunning “Ave Maria,” continuing a cherished holiday tradition.

After surviving a near-death experience with COVID-19, piano master Nachito Herrera performs a concert of well-known holiday standards, classical music and Latin jazz on his beloved home instrument that he calls, “insert piano name here.” One of the world’s greatest Cuban pianists, Nachito’s astounding technique, natural talent and command of Cuban rhythms offer an irresistible change of pace from run-of-the-mill Christmas fare.
Please note, Nachito’s show will be pre-recorded from his home where continues to rebuild his health after hospitalization with COVID-19.

The Night Before Christmas: In Concert brings Soulful Santa, Mrs. Claus, Santa’s Fine Reindeer, and the famous Dancing Chitlins to life with show-stopping, roof-raising music, in styles ranging from R&B and hip hop, to jazz, blues, and gospel, in a contemporary adaptation of the beloved holiday classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Sounds of Blackness holiday favorite hits “Joy of Christmas,” and “Soul Holidays,” are featured, along with arrangements of classic carols like “Silent Night” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”
Featuring 17 vocalists, including Ordway Resident Artist Jamecia Bennett, and the Sounds of Blackness 10-piece band, The Night Before Christmas: In Concert will be recorded in the Ordway’s acoustically-rich Concert Hall. This virtual presentation will deliver a concertized version of the program’s music, giving viewers a “front row” feel through close-ups of the performers.

Returning by popular demand is Celtic Holiday Hooley! Come for some holiday family fun! This hosted variety show is a party for all ages with Irish music, stories, sketches, step dance, caroling and more. Beyond that, it’s wacky good fun for everyone with brief guest appearances from well-known holiday characters including The Grinch and yes, even Santa Claus! Presented by the O’Shea Irish Dancers (who appeared at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in sold-out performances of Kickin’ It Irish.) Choreography and music by original Riverdancer, Cormac O’Sé, of Dublin.

Drawing inspiration from this centuries-old tradition, the Guthrie Theater is proud to present a special virtual event featuring four local actors who will reimagine Dickens’ hand-curated chapters for a global audience to enjoy. Dickens’ Holiday Classic is not a recording of the Guthrie's stage production of A Christmas Carol, but a newly conceived offering that will be filmed and available to stream.
