See Purple Rain in Minneapolis Before Broadway
Minneapolis has always been purple at heart. It’s where Prince grew up, created, performed, and stayed — even after the world caught on. This fall, the stage adaptation of Purple Rain™ premieres at the State Theatre before Broadway gets its turn. See it here first, and be sure to linger longer: walk in Prince’s footsteps, tour his favorite haunts and see the city through his eyes.
Only in Minneapolis: Where Purple Rain Premieres
Where else would Purple Rain™ take its first bow? Minneapolis is where Prince was born, where he made music history, and where his legend still pulses through our streets. Before Purple Rain™ makes its way to Broadway, the show opens in Minneapolis at the State Theatre Oct. 16 - Nov. 23, 2025. Why the State Theatre? Because at 2,150 seats, it's close in size to a Broadway theater in New York City. Whichever performance you choose, it's gonna be a beautiful night.
Note: Due to popular demand, Purple Rain now runs to Saturday, November 23 (previously November 16).
The Story Returns to Its Roots
The musical will feature songs from Prince's award-winning Purple Rain™ film as well as songs from his repertoire not featured in the movie. You'll also see iconic Minneapolis sites onstage, such as First Avenue — the main setting of the film and staple in the city's music scene — other landmarks, like the Crystal Court of the IDS Center and The Kid's house in South Minneapolis. Overall, Purple Rain™ highlighted Minneapolis' vibrant 1980s music scene, making the city a symbol of the era's music. Minneapolis is forever linked to Prince's rags-to-riches story, and you'll see this come to life onstage in a theatrical way.
Singer-songwriter Kris Kollins will play The Kid, the main character played by Prince in the semi-autobiographical 1984 film. Kollins plays piano and was discovered on social media after a nationwide search, and Purple Rain™ will mark his professional stage debut. Rachel Webb will play Apollonia, one of Prince's singing partners. Webb recently starred as Juliet in the national tour of "& Juliet." Longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes join the award-winning creative team as Prince Music Advisors.
