Forty years ago, Carol Lee Chase and Rod Massey exhibited together in a two-person show in Minneapolis; the rest is history. These longtime friends will present concurrent, solo exhibitions this October at Lowry Hill Gallery.

Rod Massey and Carol Lee Chase are two artists intent on observation with an eye for distilling the details. Their paintings express care for a shared environment, translated in paint with analog methods and imbued with evident connections to place and the passing of time.

Massey and Chase will both be present at their opening receptions on Saturday, October 24 from 2-5pm (please note the seasonal time change to the afternoon event).

The artists, alongside longtime friend Sally Johnson, will present a shared artist talk at the gallery on Saturday, November 7 at 4PM.

The exhibitions will be on view at Lowry Hill Gallery October 24 - November 28, 2026.

One Thing After Another | Rod Massey

Lowry Hill Gallery will present 70 installed paintings by the incomparable Rod Massey, ranging from postcard-sized to nearly five feet. Working directly from observation, Massey begins every painting as a sketch onsite. His subjects are varied: industrial landscapes, snow covered construction equipment, machinery and grain elevators, and flowers that wilt in their artisan-made ceramic vases. The details are captivating, honest, playful, and bleak. Massey writes of this work:

“These paintings reflect my interest in the urban and industrial environment of the Twin Cities. Objects, structures, and scenes that are often overlooked or considered mundane or utilitarian intrigue me. I find these subjects have a kind of dignity and quiet stoicism. They endure in all seasons and conditions without complaint despite wear, rust, and decay. For me, grain silos, dumpsters, trucks, construction sites and so on have a humble yet noble character that resonates. The reference to the decline of industrial America is obvious but not my main concern. It is the form, surface, and texture that most fascinate me. Light (subdued and flat) on weathered surfaces. Endurance and impermanence at once.”
