L7
“Pretend We’re Dead” made L7 a defining force in early-’90s alternative rock, but the Los Angeles band’s appeal runs deeper than its best-known single. Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner’s twin guitars drive a sound that snaps between punk urgency, heavy riffs and sharp-edged hooks. Their breakthrough album, Bricks Are Heavy, also yielded “Shitlist” and “Wargasm”; earlier tracks “Shove” and “Fast and Frightening” capture the band’s rawer punk charge.
