Best Minneapolis Running Events This Summer

Get moving this summer by signing up for one of the many organized running events in Minneapolis! Whether you’re headed for the big 26.2 miles or you only signed up for that 5K for the beer, it’s no doubt that Minneapolis has a race for every type of runner.

Get competitive and shoot for your best time with the Life Time Tri, or party it up and forget you’re even exercising at the Bubble Run. What better way to explore Minneapolis, have a blast, and get moving than by participating in one of our awesome running events? While almost every weekend is filled with some sort of marathon or 5K, we’ve picked our favorites that we think you’ll enjoy too.

Running Events this Summer 

Run For Beer Brewery Running Series – all summer

So what? If beer is your motivation to lace up those shoes, then this series is for you! It’s the perfect chance to try new breweries, and visit your tried and trues while getting in some exercise and meeting fellow beer-lovers. Start at a local brewery, head out for a 5K, and return for a cold one.

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: A free beer included in your ticket

TC Pride Rainbow Run - June 24

So what? Now in its SEVENTH YEAR, the Rainbow Run is a 5K that supports the annual Pride celebration. The run starts at Boom Island and the last mile is the Parade Route where those gathering for the parade cheer you on. All runners (ages 21+) get a free beer at the Twin Cities Pride Festival Beer Garden after the run!

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: A free beer at the Pride Beer Garden with your ticket

Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon & Relay - July 4

So what? Get ready to celebrate the 4th of July with Red, White & Boom Half Marathon & Relay! Come for the race, but also stay for the FREE Minneapolis Red, White and Boom festival!, a two-day celebration hosted by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board with an outdoor movie in the park, Family Fun Zone, local vendors, balloon artists, face-painting, and more!

How far am I running? Half Marathon (13.1 miles), Relay (6.5 miles) or 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: Post-race festivities including food and family-friendly activities

The Color Run - July 8

So what? More of a party than a race, the Color Run will make you forget you’re even exercising. Get covered in color at each kilometer, run through the Foam Zone, dance to awesome music, and have a blast all while making your way through the course!

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: A giant running party!


Life Time Tri - July 14

So what? This is what you’ve been training for. Swim, bike and run in the Life Time Tri and show everyone what you’re made of! A swim in Lake Nokomis is followed by a flat but winding tour along the Mississippi River valley, then finishes with a fast, flat run around Lake Nokomis. Stick around afterwards for live music and food & drink to refuel you.

How far am I running? 0.93-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike, 6.2-mile run

What you’ll get: A free beer, event T-shirt, custom event bag, post-race food


Life Time Torchlight - July 18

So what? Put a new twist on your night out! Head to the Life Time Torchlight for a night run with a party to follow. Start out at Loring Park for a parade and family fun night. Head out at 7:30 p.m. for the race, and meet at Father Hennepin Park afterwards for music, entertainment and complimentary drinks!

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: Custom participant shirt, access to the epic Torchlight 5K Finish Festival, complimentary post-race shuttle

Greenway Glow - July 28

So what? Raise funds for the Greenway at the Greenway Glow 5K! Run or walk the course, but make sure to stay for the after party. You’ll get free Taco Cat tacos, beer or kombucha from Eastlake Brewery, an ice cream treat, glow lights and even more!

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: Free Taco Cat tacos (bike-only taco delivery service - human power!), beer or kombucha from Eastlake Brewery, ice cream treats, snacks and beverages at the Vine Arts Center stop, a Greenway Glow water bottle, and a glow necklace!

Bubble Run - July 30

So what? A foam party disguised as exercise, the Bubble Run isn’t your typical race. Run, walk, dance and party your way through a course of bubbles! Forget about competition, the Bubble Run is all about having some fun outside and getting your feet moving in a unique way!

How far am I running? 5K (3.1 miles)

What you’ll get: Bubble Run T-shirt, runner headband, temporary tattoo

RBC Race for Kids - August 4

So what? The RBC Race for the Kids has an event for everyone! Whether you are running in shoes or gliding on skates. Sign up for an event that suits your interests or goals or maybe even try something new this year. There’s a half marathon Run or Skate, half marathon relay, 10 mile run, 5 mile run, 5K run and a kids run. Enjoy the St. Paul skyline and scenic riverfront. Bring your friends and family to help cheer you on.

How far am I running? Half marathon run or skate (13.1 miles), 10-mile, 5-mile, 5K (3.1 miles) or kids run

City of Lakes Half Marathon


City of Lakes Half Marathon - September 9

So what? Register to secure your spot! Only 1,500 entrants will be accepted to run the 2018 City of Lakes Half Marathon. Check out incredible views of Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun, and finish up at the Lake Harriet Bandshell. It’s one of the prettiest half marathons around!

How far am I running? Half Marathon (13.1 miles)

What you’ll get: Finisher medallion and City of Lakes mug

So what? Head to the beautiful Theodore Wirth Park and run alongside ponds and lakes, bogs, wildflower gardens, wooded trails, and even get a glimpse of the downtown skyline. Run the half marathon, 5K or relay. Finish up with a party in the park! Grab a Surly beer and listen to some live music while you cool down from your great feat!
