Cannabis in Minneapolis: What Visitors Should Know
An overview of the current visitor dos and don’ts related to cannabis in Minneapolis.
Visitors Can:
- Use cannabis (as long as they are 21 or older)
- On private property that is not accessible to the public (if permitted by the owner)
- At private residences and yards
- At places with approved licenses or an event permit
- Outside anywhere it isn’t prohibited by the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, such as on a sidewalk or outside a restaurant or bar (unless the City of Minneapolis passes an ordinance prohibiting it)
- Possess cannabis
- Up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower
- Up to 8 grams of concentrate
- Up to 800 milligrams of edible product (including lower-potency hemp-derived product)
- Up to 2 pounds of cannabis flower in a private residence
- Buy cannabis
- Limited amounts of recreational cannabis will be available for purchase at state-licensed recreational marijuana retailers, but likely not until summer 2025
- At the state's first legal recreational cannabis dispensaries on tribal land of the White Earth, Red Lake and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in northern Minnesota, and the Prairie Island Indian Community in southeastern Minnesota
Visitors Cannot:
- Smoke or vape cannabis products on Minneapolis park property or in indoor public places, including bars, restaurants, offices, stores and health clinics
- Use or possess cannabis in a location where the smoke, aerosol or vapor of a cannabis product could be inhaled by a minor
- Use or possess cannabis at public schools, charter schools and school buses, at state correctional facilities, or on federal property (such as courthouses, airports and national parks)
- Use cannabis when operating a motor vehicle
- Smoke cannabis in hotel rooms
- Transport cannabis across state lines or on waterways
- Sell or give retail cannabis to minors
