What’s New in Minneapolis

Minneapolis (Sept. 27, 2022) – Minneapolis has long had a reputation for being an arts and culture hub for the region, as well as a national reputation for excellence in the arts. Not resting on our laurels, the city continues to feature only-can-see-here exhibits, unique activities and world-class art next to a continuing line-up of food and drinks that will have you rethinking your return date so you can fit in more time in the city. Here is some of the latest news from the City by Nature:
Arts & Attractions
- Botticelli and Renaissance Florence: Masterworks from the Uffizi at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) Oct. 16 through Jan. 8, 2023. Paintings, sculptures, and prints from Mia’s collection will be shown alongside masterworks from Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. Included are rare paintings and drawings by Sandro Botticelli, such as his masterful Pallas and the Centaur (c. 1482); works by his teacher (Fra Filippo Lippi) and colleagues (Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Perugino). Mia is privileged to be the sole location for this exhibition, an enviable opportunity to see Uffizi stars that rarely travel outside Italy.
- The Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents ‘A Picture Gallery of the Soul,’ from traditional photography to mixed media and conceptual art and spanning a timeframe that includes the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, the exhibition over 100 Black American artists honors, celebrates, investigates, and interprets Black history, culture and politics in the United States. Now through Dec. 10 at the University of Minnesota.
- MSP Liminal, described as a “poetic glass intervention” that features hints of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s past, was installed recently across from Gate G17 on Concourse G at Terminal 1 by Miami-based Artist Monika Bravo. Visible from both inside and outside the restrooms, it is the first of several prominent works to be installed on the renovated concourse.
- The Museum of Russian Art celebrates its anniversary with TMORA: 20 Years, now through Feb. 20, 2023. The exhibition features TMORA’s permanent collection including religious icons, paintings, Soviet-era posters and artifacts, peasant crafts, samovars, toys and other works, promoting understanding of the art, people, and culture of Muscovite Russia, the Russian Empire, and the former republics of the Soviet Union.
- Arts + Rec Uptown, an art-forward entertainment venue opened their rooftop bar in the Uptown neighborhood. Serving “gastrofair,”- their take on elevated fair food like the Dorito-crusted cod, fried pickles and breakfast waffle dog, visitors will find a collection of fantastic art from local and regional artists. This fall, phase two will open and feature over 200,000 square feet in the Seven Points (former Calhoun Square) building with a black box theater, a lively speakeasy and an artist-designed 9-hole mini golf course.
- Also located in Seven Points in Uptown, new boutique Primitiva Collective, showcases the work of 30 femme artisans, many of whom are immigrants and women of color.
- Minnesota Children’s Museum debuted new exhibits for 2022 and announced a new program:
- Shipwreck Adventures, which takes up a large portion of the museum’s first floor, is the first new permanent gallery to open since the museum completed a major renovation and expansion in 2017
- Additionally, the popular special exhibit “The Amazing Castle™” returned to the museum Sept. 17 for the first time since 2015.
- Minnesota Children’s Museum is the first organization in Minnesota to be designated as a Pal Place. Pal Places commit to creating access and inclusion so that guests of all abilities have experience needs met and feel supported in public venues.
- Shipwreck Adventures, which takes up a large portion of the museum’s first floor, is the first new permanent gallery to open since the museum completed a major renovation and expansion in 2017
- Sherlock Holmes” The Exhibition opens Oct. 20 and runs through April 2, 2023, at the Minnesota History Center. Visitors will journey into the mind of the world’s most iconic detective in this visually stunning new exhibit created here in Minnesota. It features original manuscripts and period artifacts on loan from the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Library, the world’s largest gathering of material related to Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with more than 60,000 items including books and journals that transformed the Sherlock Holmes character to a cultural icon.
- Ultimate Touchdown Tour, is a new, specialized, VIP tour program highlighting the preparation for gameday prior to select Minnesota Vikings NFL games where visitors will see the Vikings Locker Room being set for gameday, broadcast spaces being prepared for media operations and never-before-seen views of one of the most luxury private bars inside U.S. Bank Stadium. The tour ends with a chance to play on the turf, get photos on the 50-yard-line, and score the ultimate touchdown in the purple endzones with family and friends.
Dining
- Guacaya Bistreaux is a new North Loop restaurant led by Panamanian chef and owner Pedro Wolcott, who also spent time cooking in New Orleans. The menu focuses on Caribbean dishes, with both tapas and main course options. It also offers an eclectic blend of the creole and Cajun cuisines of New Orleans, Panama and Southern bayou.
- Centro, known for its Northeast Minneapolis fast-casual spot for tacos and margaritas, has opened a new location on Eat Street (Nicollet and 24th). At the new location, enjoy the beloved tastes, as well as a smaller version of Vivir, the breakfast and lunch bakery/café. Or indulge in their brand-new concept, Everywhen Burgers, with smashed burgers and also fried chicken sandwiches, tater tots and sweets like cream pies and ice cream sandwiches.
- Bar Rufus at the historic Rand Tower Hotel features French bistro dishes and cocktails in the lobby of the Art Deco building. It’s the first of three concepts in the hotel by local chef and restauranteur Daniel del Prado. Playful cocktail bar Miaou Miaou and garden dining room Blondette will follow this fall on the hotel’s fifth floor.
- Alma Provisions, a cafe-style take away and retail venue featuring Alma signature food from James Beard Award-winning chef/owner Alex Roberts, goods and apothecary, opened at 46th & Bryant in Southwest Minneapolis. Baked goods, breakfasts, deli-style sandwiches, salads and more can be purchased alongside Alma-made pantry provisions, curated goods and hand-crafted bath and body products with Alma’s signature scent for the season.
- Keiko’s Alkaline Bodega and Herbs serves 100% plant-based food: spelt flour, amaranth grain, plant-based milks, boxes of garbanzo beans, teas, gummies, cold-pressed juices. Black-owned and on a mission to make health foods like chickpea “tuna,” seasoned quinoa salads and collard greens affordable and accessible, Keiko’s brightly colored shop is at Lake and Bryant in South Minneapolis.
- Sainaa Café is a family-owned, Ethiopian coffee shop named for the Oromo word for “come inside” and “memories.” Brewing coffee from the “undisputed coffee capital of the world” in Minneapolis with Midwestern values, this Uptown business opened recently on West Lake Street.

More Minneapolis
Minneapolis’ Cultural Districts were identified by the City of Minneapolis to highlight the rich sense of cultural and/or linguistic identity rooted in communities significantly populate by people of color, Indigenous people and/or immigrants.
