VISUAL art Jim Hodges: Give More Than You Take Through May 11 The first comprehensive survey to examine the trajectory of the American sculptors twenty five-year career shows the breadth and complexity of Jim Hodgess thoughtful, materials-based practice. Hodgess work typically begins with humble, even overlooked objects from everyday lifesilk scarves and flowers, mirrors, light bulbs, glass, clothing, metal chains, decals, and sheet musicthat are transformed through simple gestures and actions. These acts of poetic reconsideration elevate his pieces to other levels of interpretation and meaning, and the results are poignant sculptural mediations on life, love, loss and a range of human experience. In addition to showcasing rarely seen works and a new, expansive tapestry made specifically for this exhibition, Jim Hodges: Give More Than You Take positions Hodgess work in the context of its time and illuminates its singularity and subtle, radical subversion. |
visual art Cinematheque Tangier, a project by Yto Barrada Through May 18 The exhibition includes films, artworks, and artifacts that speak to the artist Yto Barrada's connection with the social and political realities that shape her hometown of Tangierits rich and fractured history of migration, indigenous communities, and colonization. In the gallery, screenings of short works from the archive of Cinémathèque de Tanger and the Walkers Ruben/Bentson Collection reflect life in the region from the 1930s to the present. Sculptures by BarradaPalm Sign and a set of dioramas that depict cinemas during the heyday of grand theatersare presented with her film Hand-Me-Downs (2011), a montage of Super 8 home movies from the 1960s. Artist-commissioned and vintage movie posters and a Scopitone music jukebox featuring films made by North African migrant workers in 1960s Paris are also on view. Together, these elements create an album that portrays Moroccos rich and complex visual and cinematic culture. |
visual art Christian Marclay: The Clock Opens June 14 Winner of the Golden Lion award at the 2011 Venice Biennale, Christian Marclay's The Clock samples thousands of excerpts from the history of film that indicate the passage of timefrom clock towers to wristwatches to buzzing alarm clocksthat the artist has edited together to unfold on the screen in real time as a 24-hour montage. Called "an abundant, magnificent work" (The Financial Times) and "utterly transfixing" (The Huffington Post), The Clock is Marclays most ambitious moving-image project to date, garnering rave reviews since its premiere in 2010, and subsequent presentations at a host of venues worldwide. Several 24-hour screenings are scheduled during the course of the exhibitions run at the Walker. |
visual art Art Expanded: 1958-1978 Opens June 14 Drawing on the Walkers rich permanent collection, Art Expanded, 19581978 explores a pivotal juncture in the development of 20th century art, when artists around the globe began to challenge, critique, and upend previous assumptions that one must be loyal to a specific medium in ones work, a change in attitude and practice that led to a proliferation of radical, hybrid art forms during these two decades. Including a broad range of works, from room-based installations of objects and images to works on paper, ephemera, and film, the exhibition is organized around five thematic sections that bring together the explosion of intersecting ideas and relationships appearing during this time. |
visual art Hopper Drawing: A Painter's Process Through June 20 Hopper Drawing: A Painters Process is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (18821967). More than anything else, Hoppers drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artists work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifsthe street, the movie theater, the office, the bedroom, the roadthat he would return to throughout his career as an artist. This exhibition, organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, showcases drawings bequeathed to the museum by the artists widow Josephine Hopper, many of which have never before been exhibited or researched. The show surveys Hoppers significant and underappreciated achievements as a draftsman, and will pair many of his greatest oil paintingsincluding Office at Night (1940), an important piece from the Walkers collectionwith their preparatory drawings and related works. The exhibition also features groundbreaking archival research into the buildings, spaces, and urban environments that inspired his work. |
