TWIN CITIES NEWEST THEATRE COMPANY TO PRESENT DESDEMONA: A PLAY ABOUT A HANDKERCHIEF
Minneapolis, Minn. June 26, 2012 Mission Theatre Company, the Twin Cities newest theatre company is thrilled to present Paula Vogels comic deconstruction of Shakespeares Othello, Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief July 12-20 at the James Sewell Ballet TEK BOX in The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts.
As the wrongly accused and suffering wife of Shakespeares tragic Moor, Othello, Desdemona has long been viewed as the victim of circumstance. But as Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel demonstrates in her comic deconstruction of Shakespeares playaligning tongue-in-cheek humor while raising serious questions as to the role of women through the agesDesdemona was far from the quivering naïf weve all come to know. Vogel remains one of the smartest, most original and engaging playwrights to come along in the last few years. NY Newsday.
Having slept with Othellos entire encampment, Desdemona, played by Abby DeSanto revels in her bawdy tales of conquest. Her foils and rapt listeners are the other integral and re-imagined women of this Shakespeare tragedy: Emilia (Andrea Rose Tonsfeldt), Desdemonas servant and the wife of Iago, and Bianca (Anneliese Stuht), now a majestic whore of Cyprus. Join this seasoned cast on Vogels humorous and dramatic journey.
Performances are at 7:30pm July 12, 13, 15, 16 & 18-20. Tickets range from $5 15 and can be purchased at www.missiontheatrecompany.com or by calling 612.234.7168
