Sathre, Rice Win Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon
More than 3800 Compete in 13.1 Mile, Relay & 5K Races
Minneapolis, Minn. – July 4, 2016 – Ben Sathre of Chaska and Lauren Rice of Minneapolis won individual victories at this morning’s Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon, Relay & 5K. Sathre, 26, ran the 13.1 mile course in 1:08:14 to win the men’s title, establishing a new event record. Rice, 25, clocked 1:22:50 for the women’s title. Each earned $500 for their efforts.
“The last couple miles there wasn’t much shade, but that’s what you get this time of year,” Sathre said about a sunny race morning with temperatures in the mid-70s. “It could have been so much worse.”
Rounding out the top-three in the men’s competition were John Bleday of Westwood, Mass., runner-up in 1:08:32 and Daniel Everett of Ames, Iowa, third in 1:12:03.
For women’s champ Rice, the race fit into her traditional Independence Day routine. “I always did a Fourth of July race when I was little, so I like the running on the Fourth of July idea.”
Joining Rice at the front of the women’s pack were Jennifer Vande Vegte of Sioux Center, Iowa, runner-up in 1:24:57, and Rachel Anderson of Hudson, Wisc., third in 1:27:09.
The winners of the companion 5K race were Joe Louiselle, 20, of St. Anthony who ran 16:37 and Izzy Lind, 14, of St. Peter who clocked 20:53. The day’s racing also included men’s, women’s, and mixed half marathon relay events.

In all, 3819 runners finished the 7th annual event. In keeping with the Independence Day theme, the event, staged at Father Hennepin Bluff Park along the Minneapolis riverfront, featured post-race hot dogs, ice cream, and yard games including a slip ‘n’ slide, dubbing itself the first picnic of the holiday.
“Minneapolis runners were graced with a lovely Independence Day morning,” Twin Cities In Motion executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said. “We were pleased to see so many people starting their holiday with a run and then enjoying themselves at the finish line festival.
