A Sally Jubilee to Honor Sally Rousse
Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Cowles Center
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., February 15, 2014 Sally Rousse has much to celebrate. As the co-founder of James Sewell Ballet (JSB) reaches her half-century birthday in March 2014, she also marks twenty years of dance artistry in the Twin Cities. JSB, friends and fans will come together to honor Rousses brilliant career with A Sally Jubilee, a gala dinner and free public performance that launches an exciting new era for Roussean independent dance-making career.
At the Cowles Center on March 30, 2014, A Sally Jubilee will feature special commentators and guest performers, including former JSB favorites Penelope Freeh and Christian Burns, and other dance mavericks, performing works choreographed aboutand byRousse. Rousse will also perform.
There would simply be no James Sewell Ballet without Sally, says James Sewell, artistic director, JSB. Sewell, together with Rousse as his muse and partner, co-founded the company in New York City in 1990 before relocating to Minneapolis twenty years ago.
Both the company that James and I created and the artistic climate are changing. We are happy and excited to support one another in our new endeavors. Its been a joy and a privilege to be both muse and mother to JSB, says Rousse.
The next twenty years look just as bright for Rousse. The artist, known for her rogue, post-ballet style, is planning to put her choreographing, teaching, writing and curating skills and experience to work, first as Artist in Residence at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) where she will be on exhibit literally - beginning June 14. While there, Rouse will co-create a new dance and theater work with theater artist Noah Bremer inspired by Swedish writer August Strindberg. She is also working with the Walker Art Center as a Community Partner, coordinating residency activities for visiting artists. Rousse will maintain strong ties with JSB as an occasional guest artist and rehearsal director and continue to perform, choreograph and advocate for dance in the Twin Cities, New York City and her native Vermont.

About Sally Rousse
Sally Rousse helped establish James Sewell Ballet as a thriving contemporary ballet ensemble, first in New York City (1990-93) and subsequently in Minneapolis. Before co-founding JSB, she was a leading dancer with Ballet Chicago and the Royal Ballet of Flanders, dancing works by Maurice Béjart, Jiri Kylián and more than 80 works created on her by contemporary choreographers. She trained at the School of American Ballet and with David Howard and studied Improvisation and Contact with Patrick Scully, Chris Aiken, Julyen Hamilton, and Hijack. She received a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Dancers in 2001, was named Artist of the Year (CityPages, 2010) and most recently won a Sage Award for Outstanding Performer (2013). The Southern Theater, Walker Art Center, Harvards American Repertory Theatre, Nickelodeon and JSB, supported by the Jerome Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the McKnight Foundation, have presented her choreography.
