ORATORIO SOCIETY OF MINNESOTA and ADRIANA ZABALA TO PRESENT REGIONAL PREMIERE of ORATORIO BASED ON THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
St. Paul, Minn. -- The Oratorio Society of Minnesota proudly announces the first concert of its 34th season, Annelies by British composer, James Whitbourn. Annelies is a 75-minute choral work for soprano soloist, choir and instrumentalists. The libretto is compiled and translated by Melanie Challenger from The Diary of Anne Frank. Annelies is the full forename of Anne Frank, now commonly referred to by her abbreviated forename, Anne. Renowned mezzo-soprano ADRIANA ZABALA will perform the title role of Anne Frank in this regional premiere. The 80-voice Oratorio Society Chorus will be accompanied by violin, cello, clarinet and piano. The concert will be conducted by Oratorio Society Artistic Director, MATTHEW MEHAFFEY.
The greatest accomplishment here is that James Whitbourn has created some music of great beauty, without trespassing into the realm of cloying. Not only does that release one to listen to the work's oases of soaring melody (both in the vocal and solo instrumental sections) with impunity but leaves the integrity of such an important piece of literature, and history, intact. - GRAMOPHONE'S February 2013 review of Annelies.
This project is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the States general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. It is also made possible with the support of Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council.
