CHANHASSEN DINNER THEATRES EXTENDS MARY POPPINS, ANNOUNCES NEXT MAIN STAGE PRODUCTION
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (CDT) announces it will extend its popular musical, Disneys MARY POPPINS through October 24th. The next Main Stage production will be SISTER ACT, which will open on October 30th and run for four months through the end of February 2016.
CDT Director of Sales and Marketing, Joel Rainville stated, "Ticket sales for MARY POPPINS have exceeded expectations in the first several weeks of the run. Sales projections and past history tell us with confidence that a two month extension is warranted to meet the demand we are experiencing. This extension also allows our fall group tour visitors the opportunity to see this magical production before we move into the holiday season.
Critics have praised the production and audiences have fully embraced it. Chanhassen Dinner Theatres President and Artistic Director Michael Brindisi stated, Its a show that delights audience members of every age. The nostalgia that goes along with MARY POPPINS adds to the shows appeal and the plays message resonates and crosses generationally.
MARY POPPINS has show-stopping dance numbers, plenty of spectacle, magic, comedy, sentiment and a tremendous, award-winning score with original songs and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman including: A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Step in Time, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Let's Go Fly A Kite and Feed The Birds. Additional music was added to the staged musical version by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Songs like Practically Perfect In Evry Way and Anything Can Happen If You Let It add to the story and suit the adaptation, which aligns with P.L. Travers original popular childrens stories later brought to life in film through the magic of Walt Disney.
Disneys MARY POPPINS closes October 24th to make way for SISTER ACT, which opens October 30th. Direct from Broadway, SISTER ACT, is the feel-amazing musical comedy smash called, Ridiculously fun, by the New York Post. Featuring original music by 8-time Oscar-winner, Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors, Newsies) SISTER ACT tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her away in the last place anyone would expect a convent! Set around the Christmas holidays, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she also rediscovers her own in a sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship. SISTER ACT will enjoy a very limited run (by Chanhassen standards) over the holidays and early winter months.
Director Michael Brindisi is very enthusiastic, We looked at many show options for this time slot and were very pleased that the New York licensor (Music Theatre International) offered this to us. This will be a feel-good, crowd pleasing show. They took a good movie and made it into an even better Broadway musical. Its fresh, funny, innovative and has a fast-paced story with big glitzy musical hits. Were pretty excited to rock the rafters at CDT! ISTER ACT is reason to REJOICE!
