(MINNEAPOLIS, MN) Casting Spells Productions will be presenting the musical comedy
DISENCHANTED! A New Musical Comedy That Gives Fairy Tales the Bird, at the Ritz Theater
in NE Minneapolis Sept. 26 Oct. 13, 2013.
Answering the question, What happens after Happily Ever After? DISENCHANTED! was
first performed at the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2011(Best of the Fringe!) Since then, audiences
in New York, Los Angeles, Syracuse, Philadelphia and San Francisco have experienced SOLD
OUT performances, each witnessing the empowering message of DISENCHANTED!
Mark Bergren, well known in the Twin Cities as the longtime Artistic Director of Dudley Riggs
Brave New Workshop, and in Orlando as a show director and writer for Walt Disney
Entertainment will direct DISENCHANTED! He joins James Detmar, local actor, director and
writer, and Michael Shann, former Disney executive and producer, to make up Casting Spells
Productions LLC.
DISENCHANTED! is the rare musical comedy that's not afraid to tackle hot-button issues, with
razor sharp wit and laugh out loud lyrics, that have audiences politely begging for more.
Through music and comedy, the show addresses such timeless topics as race (where The One
Who Kisses The Frog points out that it took animated movies over 70 years to welcome an
African-American princess to the fold), diet (as Cinderella bemoans the concept of skinny
princesses in the song "All I Wanna Do Is Eat"), the princess complex (in which The Little
Mermaid can't believe she gave up her undersea life, her father, her friends, not to mention her
fin just to net a man), and sexuality (Hua Mulan proves she's no less valid a princess just
because she doesn't have a man in her life in "Without The Guy", wherein our brave Chinese
warrior shares that shes absolutely fine, being a little Gertrude Stein!
DISENCHANTED! is a visual treat with a vaudevillian flavor featuring a variety of musical and
dance styles, props on steroids, and hand-puppet choreography!
By the musical's end, we discover those worn out tales of damsels in distress were indeed
"Once Upon A Time and our princesses, now empowered, embrace the fact that they truly
are mistresses of their own destinies.
You'll be enchanted with [DISENCHANTED!]! Its concepts, conceits and songs
appealed to everyone in a demographically mixed audience, regardless of ages,
sexual orientation, ethnic background, height or weight packed with a roaring,
cheering audience. As for the performers, they are superstardom bound!
