A Pair of $5,000 Scholarships Awarded to Male And Female High School Seniors
St. Paul, Minn. May 13, 2013 Twin Cities In Motion, the organizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and other Twin Cities running events, has awarded Molly Ann Kuhs of Edina High School and Ryan Trapp of Elk River High School its 2013 Twin Cities in Motion College Scholarships.
Kuhs and Trapp were chosen from a field of more than 90 applicants, based on the strength of their running accomplishments, academic performance and community service. In addition, candidates were asked to write a personal essay. This year marks the 13th year that Twin Cities In Motion, formerly Twin Cities Marathon, Inc., has awarded scholarships to the metro areas most impressive distance running scholar-athletes.
"It's an honor for Twin Cities In Motion to present these scholarships to Molly Ann and Ryan," Twin Cities In Motion Executive Director Virginia Brophy Achman said. "The talent and commitment of applicants for our scholarships always amazes me. We are proud to support high school students in our community and to share in their hopes and dreams."
Kuhs distinguished herself among TCM Scholarship nominees thanks to a 4.01 GPA heavy with AP classes, over 600 hours of volunteer work, and proven leadership skills as the captain of her cross country, Nordic ski and track teams. Kuhs was all-conference in cross country and track in 2011, plays the cello, works part-time at Marathon Sports and received outstanding coaches' recommendations. Kuhs will attend Washington University in St. Louis next fall.
Trapp impressed scholarship selectors by showing strong leadership and community service as a Youth in Government delegation leader, a Link leader and a Web Leader of the Year. He was also a team captain for his cross country and track teams. A State qualifier and three-time all-conference selection, Trapp also earned his teams the Most Improved Award. Ryan is also an excellent scholar, excelling in challenging AP and honors courses. He will be attending the University of St. Thomas in the fall.
Twin Cities In Motion has awarded $92,000 in college scholarships since the inception of the TCM College Scholarship Program. The Twin Cities In Motion College Scholarship Program is one of TCMs community outreach initiatives that include the Medtronic TC Kids Marathon, a community-wide effort that inspires healthy lifestyles among children, and the High School Running Shoe Program, which provides running shoes to high school cross country and track athletes in need.
This Saturday, in another facet of youth programming, Twin Cities In Motion will host the TC Kids Cross Country Fun Run at Como Park in St. Paul starting at 9:00 a.m. The event features half-mile, one-mile and two-mile races for kids grade K-8. Find more information at tcmevents.org.
