Minnesota Timberwolves to Celebrate Think Green Month
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation today announced plans to celebrate Think Green Month, powered by Juhl Wind Inc., and help fans implement a more eco-friendly lifestyle. The FastBreak Foundations Think Green Month focuses on organizations and events that help to preserve and protect the environment and includes the awarding of a $5,000 grant and a Think Green Competition award winner. At each home game, the Timberwolves will honor organizations and individuals that have helped preserve and improve the environment as Heroes in the Making and also air an in-game PSA that explains and promotes the importance of "Thinking Green." The Wolves will also participate in some of the elements of NBA Green Week that runs from April 4-11.
Think Green Grant
During the April 4 game vs. Golden State, the FastBreak Foundation will award a $5,000 grant to Minnesota Teen Challenge, a faith-based, residential drug and alcohol program for teens and adults. The mission of Minnesota Teen Challenge is to assist teens and adults in gaining freedom from chemical addictions and other life controlling problems by addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Minnesota Teen Challenge has focused on preserving and improving the environment by creating a neighborhood organic garden to provide a year-round opportunity for girls and women in addiction recovery to partner with the neighborhood, grow their own food, earn income, learn about food and farming techniques with community partners and expert farmers to provide support to the Minneapolis city initiatives of community supported agriculture. The funds are used toward materials and equipment for the garden site including ground preparation, building raised beds, topsoil, irrigation, garden tools, seeds, organic fertilizers and stipend for community partners.
Think Green School Competition
As part of a statewide school competition, the FastBreak Foundation and WFTC My 29 recently asked schools to describe how they Think Green. From March 1-28, schools submitted their plan on how their school or classroom is making an effort to preserve and protect the environment. The winner will be selected based on school impact, environmental impact and originality. On April 10, the winning school will receive a surprise award presentation at their school from Timberwolves mascot Crunch. On April 17, the school will receive a $1,000 grant and a "Green Wolfie" trophy during the Wolves/Memphis game.
Reading Time-Out
The FastBreak Foundation will host a Reading Time-Out, powered by Juhl Wind Inc., on April 25 at a local elementary school that is doing its part to preserve and protect the environment. A Timberwolves player, broadcaster and mascot Crunch are scheduled to appear.
NBA Green Week
NBA Green Week (April 4-11) presented by Sprint is conducted in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council in an effort to generate awareness and funds for protecting the environment. Throughout NBA Green Week, adidas -- the leagues official outfitter -- will outfit all players with 100 percent organic cotton NBA Green shooting shirts. Players will also wear NBA Green headbands and wristbands made from 45 percent organic cotton during games throughout the week to raise additional environmental awareness. NBA coaches will also be wearing NBA Green lapel pins
