Minnesota Dance Theatre Celebrates 50 years with Repertory Production at The Cowles Center
Minneapolis, Minn. February 22, 2012 The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts is elated to have Minnesota Dance Theatre back in The Goodale Theatre March 23rd through 25th. Minnesota Dance Theatre continues its 50th Anniversary Season with an evening of repertory featuring the regional premiere of master choreographer, Jirí Kyliáns wild La Cathédrale Engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) with music by Claude Debussy. The New York Times commented dancers pulled one another across the floor, whirled one another about and, without apparent transition, soared from the floor into the air, only to plummet downward again. The evening also includes the restaging of founder, visionary Loyce Houltons Ancient Air with music by George Crumb (including a cycle of songs on texts by Federico Garcia Lorca), and the reprise of Lise Houltons playful Point of Departure set to music by Franz Joseph Haydn.
Celebrate half a century of great ballet in the Twin Cities with MDT at The Cowles Center March 23 & 24 at 8pm or March 25 at 2pm. Tickets range between $20 and $32 plus handling fees and can be purchased at www.thecowlescenter.org, in person or over the phone at 612.206.3600 Tuesday Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm.
About Minnesota Dance Theatre
Loyce Houlton, one of the first American women to gain international recognition as a choreographer, teacher and producer, founded Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) in 1962. In doing this she embarked on an artistic journey that would change the Twin Cities artistic landscape and have a lasting impact on the world of dance. National recognition for its innovative performances helped established MDT as the flagship dance company in Minnesota. In 1995, Lise Houlton was appointed artistic director, having recently retired from an acclaimed international performing career that included Stuttgart Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.
