Minneapolis Among Best Cities for Cyclists
San Francisco, CA (May 28, 2014) NerdWallet, a personal finance website, recently conducted a study to find the best cities for cyclists in the nation and Minneapolis made the top 10.
Since 2000, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. has increased by more than 61%. As the number of cyclists continues to grow, consumer advocacy site NerdWallet wanted to determine the most cyclist-friendly cities. To make this determination, NerdWallet analyzed the following criteria:
- Percentage of population that commutes by bicycle
- Bicyclist fatalities per 10,000 biking commuters
- Federal transportation funds allocated to bike and pedestrian projects per capita
- Miles of bicycle lanes, paths, and routes per square mile
NerdWallet ranked Minneapolis as the third best city for cyclists in the nation and 4.5% of Minneapolis population commutes by bicycle. The City of Minneapolis allocates $10.95 of its federal transportation budget per capita to bike and pedestrian projects and has 3.9 miles of bicycle lanes, paths, and routes per square mile for residents to enjoy.
Minneapolis is an excellent city for cyclists, said NerdWallet analyst Sreekar Jasthi. Minneapolis residents are making use of the citys excellent biking infrastructure. Only Portland has more bicycle commuters than Minneapolis.
Other great cities for cyclists include Denver, Seattle, and D.C. Read the full study online.
