Metrodome Demolition Completed Ahead of Schedule
Last truck with Metrodome debris leaves the stadium site today at 1:00 pm
April 17, 2014 (Minneapolis, MN) The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) and Mortenson Construction announced today that demolition of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome has been completed one month ahead of schedule. Representatives from Frattalone Companies, the demolition contractor, will be at the 4th Street construction entrance at 1:00 pm today to watch their last truckload of debris from the Metrodome leave the project site. Construction activities for the new Minnesota Multi-Purpose Stadium (MMPS) are on schedule as excavation and foundation work proceeds as planned.
This is the first contract that has been completed on our way to the new stadium. Its a major milestone for the project, said Chair of the MSFA Michele Kelm-Helgen. We appreciate Frattalone Companies completing the demolition of the Metrodome safely, and ahead of schedule.
Demolition activities handled by St. Paul-based Frattalone Companies included:
- Metrodome roof deflation January 18, 2014
- Roof support cables severed February 2, 2014
- Beginning of stadium structural demolition February 10, 2014
- Ring beam implosion February 23, 2014
- Substantial completion of demolition April 16, 2014
- Stadium structural demolition duration 9.5 weeks
- Specified demolition completion date May 15, 2014
- Demolition completed ahead of schedule 4 weeks
Demolition facts:
- 4,910 truckloads of debris were hauled from the site
- 15,800 hours were logged by Frattalone Companies for demolition activities
- More than 80% of the Metrodome will be recycled including steel and concrete
- 80,000 tons of concrete will be recycled for use in other building projects
- 120 tons of cast iron and 75 tons of high density polyethylene were recycled from seats not sold to fans
- Metals are being recycled include:
- 4,500 tons of structural steel have been reclaimed and are being prepped for recycling off site
- 25 tons of precious metals have been recycled
- 300 tons of roof cables have been recycled
Construction of the new Minnesota Multi-Purpose Stadium is being managed by Mortenson Construction and project associate Thor Construction under contract with the MSFA. Construction on the 65,000 seat, 1.7 million square-foot facility is scheduled for completion in July 2016.
