Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Earns National Safety and Security Award

National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security Names Event a Facility of Merit

St. Paul, Minn. – July 13, 2016 – The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon will be honored today as one of twelve Facility of Merit Award winners by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4). The marathon, organized by Twin Cities In Motion, was the only road race to earn the honor this year.

A total of 12 sports venues will be recognized for their leadership in addressing safety and security issues as part of the 2016 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition held this week in Phoenix, Arizona. Other 2016 honorees included Yankee Stadium in New York, Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, and Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

“We’re honored to earn this recognition in the eyes of our peers,” Twin Cities In Motion executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said. “Safety and security have been the top priorities for our organization since it was founded in 1982. The entire Twin Cities In Motion team – staffers, year-round volunteers, race-day volunteers – and the city agencies we work with share in this honor because all have played an important roles in planning and executing safe, secure events for the last 35 years.”

Only three other endurance running events have earned the award previously: BAA Boston Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the Competitor Group, which hosts the Rock N Roll Marathon series.

“The Facility of Merit Award is to allow professional leagues, NCAA member institutions and marathon and endurance organizations to honor outstanding facilities that have gone above and beyond for their sports safety and security” said NCS4 Director Dr. Lou Marciani. “These contributions involve enhancing safety and security at their venue beyond what is normally required, and setting an example for other facilities to follow.”
