2013-14 MCKNIGHT ARTIST FELLOWSHIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS AWARDED TO ANTHONY MARCHETTI, PAULA MCCARTNEY, MOHAMUD MUMIN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, AND ALEC SOTH OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA

Minneapolis, May 24, 2013mnartists.org is pleased to announce the four artists selected to receive the 20132014 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers. This years fellows are Anthony Marchetti, Paula McCartney, Mohamud Mumin, of Minneapolis, and Alec Soth of St. Paul, Minnesota. The mnartists.org/McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers support mid-career artists residing in Minnesota who use photography as a primary means of creative, personal expression. The $25,000 fellowships will enable these four artists to study, reflect, experiment, and explore over a twelvemonth period with the support and assistance from mnartists.org and the McKnight Foundation. Work created during the fellowship year will be presented in the form of a catalog and a public presentation about their new work. Fellows will have additional opportunities to consult with review panelists, local curators and local and national artists about their practice and receive opportunities for professional development throughout the fellowship year. The fellowships are funded by a generous grant from The McKnight Foundation and administered by mnartists.org.

201314 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers Recipients

Anthony Marchetti
Anthony Marchetti is a Minneapolis-based photographer who focuses on the relationship between humans and the built environment. He is the recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board grants, is a two-time Bush Artist Fellowship finalist, and this is his second McKnight Fellowship. His new project explores his maternal grandmother's flight from Hungary near the end of World War II.


Paula McCartney
Paula McCartney makes photographs and artists books that explore the idea of constructed landscapes. McCartney earned an M.F.A. in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and has previously received grants from the Aaron Siskind Foundation, the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her first monograph, Bird Watching, was published by Princeton Architectural Press.

Mohamud Mumin
Mohamud Mumin holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. A self-taught photographer, Mumin harnesses photographys capacity to facilitate dialogue across barriers and cultures. In his most recent body of work he centers on the Somali community in Minnesota, as they negotiate and redefine their essence and boundaries of their identity. Mumins recent work, The Youth//Dhallinyarada will be on view at The Weisman Art Museum, July 13, 2013 through January 2014.

Alec Soth
Alec Soths photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and São Paulo Biennials. Survey exhibitions of his work have been exhibited by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland (2008) and the Walker Art Center (2010). In 2008, Soth started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, and is a member of Magnum Photos.

About The McKnight Artist Fellowships

The four McKnight Photography fellows were among 108 applicants from Minnesota who applied for the 2013-2014 fellowship. The three arts professionals who served as jurors were Anne Havinga, Estrellita and Yousef Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Sarah Meister, Curator, Department of Photography, Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Hank Willis Thomas, Photographer.

Support for individual artists has been a cornerstone of the McKnight Foundation's arts program since it began in 1981. The foundation's overall interest in enriching community recognizes that artists and their contributions are vital to the state's health. McKnight Artist Fellowships deliver significant financial assistance to individuals whose work demonstrates accomplishment and the promise of continued excellence. Awards are made in 12 disciplines through nine arts organizations and presenters.

The McKnight Artist Fellowships were created in 1981 to help artists set aside time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration; take advantage of opportunities; and work on new projects. McKnight contributes nearly $1 million per year to individual artists through the 12 fellowship programs. The Foundation delegates management of the fellowships to arts organizations that tailor programs to the unique challenges of different creative disciplines.
