MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 17, 2019) — The Great Northern Presented by Target is thrilled to announce its 2019 Concert Event on Nicollet Mall, set to bring together national recording artists and local favorites as part of its annual celebration of all things winter in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Music on the Mall will feature Brooklyn-based indie pop duo Matt and Kim, known for infectious, beat-driven anthems and explosive live shows, who will perform on Nicollet Mall between 10th and 11th Street on Jan. 31. The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. and music begins at 6:30 p.m.

Matt and Kim, formed in 2004, consists of Matt Johnson (vocals/keyboards) and Kim Schifino (drums). With six studio albums to date, their 2009 song “Daylight” has reached platinum status, and the duo continues to headline sold-out tours across North America and at many major music festivals including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and the Firefly Music Festival.

Currently on a U.S. headlining tour, Matt and Kim’s latest offering, titled Almost Everyday, was released on May 4, 2018, and offers some of the band's most personal music to date.

“At the Great Northern, we believe in being out in the cold and snow and spending winter in winter. We know that Minnesotans won’t let snow or cold stop them from seeing a great outdoor show,” said Cat Beltmann, Executive Director of The Great Northern. “We saw how much people loved the live music on Nicollet Mall during the Super Bowl, and we look forward to producing an event that brings that same level of energy and excitement to back to downtown in 2019.

Music on the Mall, sponsored by The Minneapolis Foundation, is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bundle up as the concert will be held snow or shine. Partnering Nicollet Mall restaurants including Brit’s Pub, The Local and Barrio will open patios to concert goers and offer food and beverage discounts. Additional event partners include The Downtown Improvement District, the Made Here initiative of Hennepin Theater Trust, Caribou Coffee, and Surly Brewing.

The Great Northern brings together three Minnesota legacy events and founding partners: City of Lakes Loppet, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, in addition to a flurry of original programming.
