Mall of America, the nation’s largest retail and entertainment destination, turns 27 years old
BLOOMINGTON, MN— August 8, 2019
Mall of America, the largest retail and entertainment destination in North America, will celebrate its 27th birthday on August 11.
In 2019, Mall of America welcomed over 30 new tenants to the 5.6 million square foot property including The VOID, a critically acclaimed immersive virtual reality experience, Morphe Cosmetics, Wonder’s Ice Cream, SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker and a new two floor H&M Flagship store.
Mall of America continues to adapt to the changing retail landscape and has incorporated a variety of pop-up locations and experiences throughout the property. Throughout the past year, Mall of America opened a variety of limited time retailers and attractions including GH Lab, a partnership with Mall of America, Amazon and Good Housekeeping magazine, Savage X Fenty by Rihanna, Good American and the candy-coated experiential adventure known as Candytopia. To celebrate the holiday season last year, Mall of America announced a new “Skate the Star” experience where guests could ice-skate in a custom-built oval ice rink off the North entrance of the Mall.

Mall of America first opened its doors on August 11, 1992 and welcomed 150,000 people that first day. Since then, the Mall has grown from 4.2 million square feet to 5.6 million square feet. The Mall remains the largest retail and entertainment destination in North America with 520 stores, more than 60 different dining options, a 7-acre theme park Nickelodeon Universe, a 1.3-million-gallon aquarium, an Escape Game, two mini golf courses and several other world-class attractions.
Throughout its 27 years, Mall of America has hosted thousands of events including celebrity appearances, autograph signings, concerts and community events. It has been a site for several feature films and television shows. The Mall generates more than $2 billion annually in economic impact for the state of Minnesota and has put Minnesota on the map as a tourist destination attracting more than 40 million guests from all over the world.
