Minneapolis, Nov. 19, 2015 – James Sewell Ballet and The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts are working together to bring Myron Johnson’s Nutcracker (not so) Suite to its new home at The Cowles Center.
A long-time Twin Cities tradition and Ballet of the Dolls favorite, Nutcracker (not so) Suite has added a unique twist to the traditional holiday tale over the course of the past two decades. Since its inception in 1993, the ballet has transformed the story of Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, and the Rat King into a retro-styled romp—filled with contemporary music, outlandish characters, Barbie dolls, and show-stopping choreography. From its original home at the Ritz Theatre with Ballet of the Dolls, Nutcracker (not so) Suite is finding new life with The Cowles Center and James Sewell Ballet. Within its new home, Nutcracker (not so) Suite will see new settings, new choreography, new music, and new artists emerge from this long-standing work. As the creator of the Twin Cities’ first year-round dance-theater program, Johnson has continued to be a dance innovator in Minnesota and this move to The Cowles Center, the area’s flagship for dance, is a natural one.
In its mission to act as a catalyst for dance and the performing arts, The Cowles Center will continue to bring the work of innovative, dynamic, and exciting artists—like Myron Johnson and James Sewell Ballet— to the forefront of the Twin Cities cultural scene. This re-launching of Nutcracker (not so) Suite is an exciting step in achieving that goal.
