MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA BEGINS
“INSIDE THE CLASSICS” SEASON WITH PROGRAM
EXPLORING ROMEO AND JULIET, Jan 28
Casual series at Orchestra Hall is led by conductor Sarah Hicks and hosted by Sam Bergman
January 28 concert explores Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, featuring music by Sergei Prokofiev
Inside the Classics, the Minnesota Orchestra’s casual series that explores great classical works through performances and enlightening conversation, begins its eighth season on January 28, with Love in a Time of War: Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. In this concert, conductor Sarah Hicks and host Sam Bergman will examine the widely-differing approaches that composers have taken to musically adapting Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The Orchestra will first perform musical excerpts by a range of composers from Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn to Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. Then, after intermission, the Orchestra will perform the music of Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, featuring seven movements selected by Sarah Hicks from the composer’s three Romeo and Juliet suites.
The concert is performed at the Orchestra’s home venue in downtown Minneapolis, Orchestra Hall, on Saturday, January 28, at 8 p.m., with single tickets priced at $30, $20 for patrons under the age of 40 and $12 for students with a valid ID. Subscriptions and individual tickets for all 2016-17 season concerts are available online at minnesotaorchestra.org and by phone at 612-371-5656. For more details on purchasing tickets, refer to the information section at the conclusion of this press release.
The additional concerts in the 2016-17 Inside the Classics series include Bartók’s Farewell, exploring Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra (March 3) and Becoming Legend, featuring Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony (July 15). Visit minnesotaorchestra.org for more information on these upcoming concerts.
