The Minneapolis appearance is part of a new worldwide tour including stops in Dubai and Rio de Janeiro. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16. The Gipsy Kings are Gitano members of two related Romani families, the Reyes and Baliardos, who have produced nearly 20 albums over a 30 year career. They hail mostly from Montpelier and Arles, France, where the parents had settled to escape the Spanish Civil War, and got their start playing weddings, festivals and in the streets. In 1987, the Gipsy Kings self-titled debut album introduced the world to Rumba Gitano, the sound of South Americas rumba married to flamenco guitars. With Bamboleo and Volare, the Gipsy Kings scored huge international hits. The album appeared on the top ten album charts in 12 European countries and spent 40 weeks on the U.S. charts, a rare achievement for a Spanish language album.
Throughout the 90s, their impassioned performances endeared them to the global mainstream, led to a greatest hits album in 1994 and The Best of the Gipsy Kings in 1995. They continue to win new fans through more recent inclusions of their music in Zorro the Musical and movies including The Big Lebowski and a Spanish version of Youve Got a Friend in Me in Toy Story 3. The Gipsy Kings also performed on ABCs Dancing with the Stars in May 2010.
