August is shaping up to be a stellar month to get your dance on in the Mainroom. On July 22, First Avenue continues to bring popular Minneapolis dance night traditions to our “extra extra large” room: Nightchurch XXL featuring DJs Keith Millions, Sophia Eris, Espada, and the Nightchain Crew. On August 12, DJ Jake Rudh pits the two decades that produced (arguably) the best dance music against each other at Transmission Presents: ‘80s vs. ‘90s. On August 19 we will fast-forward a decade and celebrate the Flip Phone Era: the late 90s and early 00s with Flip Phone XXL: Short Shorts.

Head up to Duluth this Saturday for a night of music goodness. Local indie rock darlings Hippo Campus headline, with Channy Leaneagh-fronted Poliça, and local heroes Low, Remo Drive, and J.S. Ondara rounding out an eclectic evening on the lakefront. See them all outdoors at Bayfront Park in Duluth on July 8.

"With Poptone, [Daniel] Ash and [Kevin] Haskins have found a way to make sense of bringing the past to the stage in 2017. This, technically, is not a band reunion. The two are the common threads between Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets and the only members of those three groups involved in this project . . . 'It's weird how you just add or subtract a member of the band and it becomes something completely different,' says Ash. 'So, this is going to be different again, when we do original material and new stuff down the road’” (LA Weekly). Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets team up with bassist Diva Dompe to form goth/punk super-group Poptone; they headline the Mainroom on July 8, playing music from all three original groups.

Nicolas Jaar Live returns to the Mainroom after two visually stunning shows—once with super-group Darkside in 2014 and solo this past November. If you haven't seen Nicolas Jaar Live yet, you're missing out on a truly immersive, transcendental, and awe-inspiring musical experience (and trust us, we're not the only ones using hyperbolic adjectives to describe Jaar's music). The Chilean-American composer has a knack for producing music that is compelling, mesmerizing, and sharply political all at once. He returns to headline the Mainroom on Friday, July 14.
