Drink to Save Pollinators with the Minnesota Zoo
Drink to Save Pollinators with the Minnesota Zoo
Apple Valley, MINN July 20, 2015 Minnesotas prairie butterflies and other pollinators are vanishing along with 99% of their habitat. But you can help.
The Minnesota Zoo is partnering with Fair State Brewing Cooperative to create a limited edition brew featuring prairie grasses to help save endangered butterflies like the Dakota skipper. When you order a Dakota Skipper Endangered Reserve from one of our partner restaurants listed at mnzoo.org/butterflybrew, a portion goes to supporting the Zoos efforts to save pollinators through the Prairie Butterfly Conservation Program. This brew is as rare as the butterfly its named for, and available for only two weeks -- from July 25 to August 7 the adult lifespan of the skipper.
The Minnesota Zoos young professionals organization, AZUL, is hosting an event to celebrate the tapping of the first kegs. You can get a first taste of this endangered brew at Butterfly Brunch on Saturday July 25 from 10:00 a.m. noon at the Fair State Brewing Cooperative, 2506 Central Ave NE in Minneapolis. The event is free to attend. Beer and kombucha will be available for purchase from Fair State Brewing Cooperative. Brunch food will be available for purchase from the Kabomelette food truck. Fair State Brewing Cooperative will be open for regular business until midnight.
The final pours will be featured at Minnesota Zoos popular Brew at the Zoo beer tasting event on Saturday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m., marking the end of this tasty promotion to save native pollinators.
The Dakota skipper species has vanished from more than 75 percent of its former range. The Minnesota Zoos Prairie Butterfly Conservation Program scientists work with many partners to save Minnesotas endangered prairie butterflies, studying reasons for their decline in the wild and breeding them at the Minnesota Zoo to create an insurance population to prevent their extinction.
Make a donation to the Prairie Butterfly Conservation Program for the Butterfly Brunch and you could win a behind-the-scenes tour of the butterfly research program at the Minnesota Zoo and a behind-the-scenes tour of the brewing facilities at Fair State Brewing Cooperative.
