50th ANNIVERSARY GALA
(Minneapolis/St. Paul) The Guthrie Theater today announced that actors Daniel Gerroll, Patricia Kalember and Whoopi Goldberg will appear in BEHOLD: A Gala Performance celebrating the Guthries 50th anniversary on June 22, 2013. BEHOLD marks a return to the Guthrie for Gerroll, who last appeared in Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing in the 2011-12 season. Kalember, a stage actress best-known for her roles on televisions Thirtysomething and Sisters, makes her Guthrie debut alongside husband Gerroll in the performance, which will be the first time the pair will perform together since a 2002 production of Blithe Spirit at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY. Goldberg also returns to the signature thrust stage for the first time since her five-night Guthrie engagement in May of 1988.
Guthrie audiences will remember Gerroll from his roles as Benedick in the 2011 Guthrie production of Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing, as Scrooge in the 2010 production of the holiday favorite A Christmas Carol, as well as phonetics professor Henry Higgins in the theaters 2004 production of Shaws Pygmalion. In 1981 Gerroll won an Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance in Brian Friels Translations, directed by Joe Dowling at Manhattan Theatre Club. His additional theater credits include Plenty, High Society, and Enchanted April on Broadway, among others. More recently, he is well recognized for his television appearances on CBSs Blue Bloods and The Good Wife, ABCs Ugly Betty, and USA Networks Burn Notice, and The Starter Wife, as well as roles in films such as Chariots of Fire, Big Business and Drop Dead Fred.
While Kalember is best-known for her lead roles on the NBC drama Sisters (with Swoosie Kurtz, Sela Ward and Julianne Phillips), on the popular 1980s television show Thirtysomething, and as Judge Karen Taten on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, she is an award-winning stage actress with credits on Broadway, Off-Broadway and at numerous regional theaters. Kalember most recently played Jacqueline in the 2012 Broadway production of Dont Dress for Dinner and previous credits include Manhattan Theatre Clubs Losing Louie, and the 1987 Broadway production of The Nerd. Her film work includes: Signs, The Company Men, Limitless and Rabbit Hole.
Goldberg is in the elite category of artists who have received Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards in her career, as well as numerous other awards for her work as a performer, producer, and human rights activist. Among her stage credits are Broadway productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Thoroughly Modern Millie and the title role in Ma Raineys Black Bottom. Her recent theater projects have included producing Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy on Broadway and making her West End acting debut in London during a limited engagement of the same show, as well as co-writing the Sugar Plum Ballerinas series of books for girls. Since 2007 she has been seen daily as moderator and co-host of The View on ABC-TV.
As previously announced BEHOLD: A Gala Performance will he co-hosted by Guthrie favorites Greta Oglesby and Sally Wingert, and will feature veteran of Greys Anatomy and Broadway T.R. Knight, Olivier Award-winner and Tony Award-nominee Tracie Bennett, an original composition by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, and award-winning male vocal ensemble Cantus, among others. BEHOLD has musical direction by Andrew Cooke, choreography by Brian Sostek and is written by Mark Benninghofen. Peter Flynnwhose extensive credits include directorial work on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theaters and other gala eventswill direct. A star-studded performance featuring actors, composers and writers with ties to the Guthries past and future, BEHOLD: A Gala Performance will be held on June 22, 2013, on the Wurtele Thrust Stage and is a part of the Guthries 50th season weekend celebration (June 22-23, 2013). BEHOLD will be presented in conjunction with Anniversary Weekend celebration dinners the Golden Soirée and Fête 50, which include tickets to the performance and are on sale now through the Guthries Anniversary Line at 612.225.6350.
