Countrys Only Ballroom Dance Theater Company Performs Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at The Cowles Center
Beyond Ballroom Dance Companys 11th annual performance includes new work that explores the evolution and beauty of the time-honored Waltz.
WHAT:
Bringing the joy and beauty of ballroom dancing to audiences through innovative theatrical productions, Beyond Ballroom Dance Company (BBDC) will take the stage Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 at the Cowles Center for its 11th annual performance. The Twin Cities-based dance company is the only one of its kind in the country, consisting of professional ballroom champions whose lively performances highlight the artistry of dance in a theater setting unbound by the rules of competition.
We challenge what most people think of as ballroom dancing, taking it beyond the competitive sport it has become and using difference dance styles to tell a story, said Deanne Michael, BBDCs executive director. This year, we are excited to perform three distinct pieces that highlight multiple styles of dance, story lines and moods.
A highlight of this years show is a brand new work called Crossing Moon River inspired by the history and evolution of one of the most enduring dances of all timethe Waltz. From scandalous beginnings as a forbidden dance, to todays contemporary adaptations, BBDC presents the rich heritage and evolution of the original dirty dance.
In step with our reputation for creating lively, evocative performances, this new work uses humor and contemporary music to give an alternative view of a familiar dance form, said Michael.
The 2014 performance also includes a new variation of Red Riding Hood Suite, in which the sly sophisticated Wolf comes across the not so sweet Red and her surprisingly capable Grandmother, getting more than he bargained for. Special guest artists Andrew Winett of Las Vegas, and Tsha Marie from San Diego will also perform in He Said, She Said where they will showcase a fusion of the sensual movement of Latin dance with the provocative entertainment of burlesque to tell the timeless story of boy meets girl.
