Our Birthday. Your Party. Mall of America® turns 25 on August 11
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (August 7, 2017) – After 25 weeks of celebration, Mall of America, the largest retail and entertainment destination in North America, is turning 25 on August 11.
Staying true to its 25th birthday motto: “Our Birthday. Your Party,” Mall of America kicked off the 25-week celebration in February with a pop-up concert by Boyz II Men. Since then, guests have enjoyed a summer concert series, a new nighttime spectacular light show, a birthday lounge pop-up and more. Additionally, Mall of America partnered with Simon Says Give to fill 2,500 Birthdays in a Box for children in need around the country. Each box contains celebratory ingredients to throw a personal birthday party.
On the actual birthday of Mall of America, August 11, festivities will include two world record attempts: one for the for the most conical birthday hats worn and another for the most cupcakes decorated at one time. Guests will also be treated to birthday cupcakes and a one-of-a-kind cake designed by Buddy Valastro (a Carlo’s Bakery will open at the Mall later this summer), prize giveaways throughout the day and live music entertainment.
A piece of the party will live on beyond the birthday with a custom yarn installation in the Mall’s North Atrium created by internationally-acclaimed artist HOTTEA. The finished art installation will be on display for guests through October 31.
“The vision for Mall of America has always been more than a shopping center, it’s the intersection of the best in retail, entertainment and dining, and above all, a place for friends and family to gather and make memories,” said Jill Renslow, SVP of Marketing and Business Development for Mall of America. “We’ve been a leader in retail and entertainment for 25 years, and we’re looking forward to 25 more.”
Mall of America first opened its doors on August 11, 1992 and welcomed 100,000 people that first day. Since then, the Mall has grown from 4.2 million square feet to 5.6 million square feet. The Mall is still known as the largest retail and entertainment destination in North America with 520 stores, Nickelodeon Universe, more than 50 dining options and several other world-class attractions.
Since 1992 Mall of America has hosted thousands of events including celebrity appearances, autograph signings, and concerts, community organization events, brand activations, and much more. It has been a site for several feature films and television shows. The Mall generates more than $2 billion annually in economic impact for the state of Minnesota and has put Minnesota on the map as a tourist destination attracting more than 40 million guests from all over the world.
