Vagabond by Agnès Varda
Based on a real-life story, Vagabond is a portrait of the will to live despite alienation, and ultimately, death. Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) is a young hitchhiker who wanders the south of France for the winter, a region associated with coastal sunshine and vineyards. Her story illustrates moments of survival along the strenuous road, from laughter to romantic liaisons to the search for warmth and food. Filmmaker Agnès Varda holds Mona at an intentional distance, revealing little about her life before the journey, while still drawing attention to her distinct humanity. 1985, France, DCP, in French with English subtitles, 105 min.
