Party at Hennepin History Museum
After Hours at the Museum: Fairs & Sideshows
Memorabilia from Hennepin County’s historic fairs, sideshows, and vaudeville entertainers
Minneapolis, MN: 18+ party Friday, August 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m., showcasing a barker, fair games, music, fair food, and of course, Hennepin County history.
Build your anticipation for the kickoff of the Minnesota State Fair with a carnival themed event at the Hennepin History Museum. Do you have an oddity or talent worthy of showcasing? Take part in our fair games, which will be judged by Twin Cities barber and personality Mustache Jim.
DJ Papersleeves (Danny Sieglman of Secret Stash Records) and Tom Novak (long-time organizer of bi-monthly The Record Show) will be providing the tunes. Paul Metzger takes the stage at 8:00 p.m. Metzger is known for the art-instruments that he makes and modifies. Many of which allow him to accompany himself. A typical banjo may have five strings, but Metzger’s has 23 – and sometimes he plays it with a bow.
Among other materials, the wedding dress of Violet Hilton will be on display. Violet and Daisy Hilton were an angelic pair of conjoined twins, accomplished in violin, saxophone, and dance. They remain best known for their appearance in Tod Browning’s cult classic film, ‘Freaks’ -- although they only appear in around 10 minutes of the film and it wasn’t to their taste. Look behind the spectacle to see what Daisy and Violet’s lives were really like and how their story overlaps with Minneapolis.
