Katharina Fritsch: Multiples Presents Over 40 Works Spanning Artist’s Career at Walker Art Center

MINNEAPOLIS, February 1 2017—The Walker Art Center presents Katharina Fritsch: Multiples, spanning the career of Katharina Fritsch and celebrating the installation of her monumental new work in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Katharina Fritsch: Multiples will be on view in the Burnet Gallery from May 11–October 15, 2017. The 23-foot-high ultramarine blue Hahn/Cock (2013), the artist’s largest public art piece in a US museum collection, will be unveiled in the newly renovated Garden in June 2017.

Celebrated as one of the most innovative sculptors of our time, Katharina Fritsch mines the history, myths, and fairy tales of Germany as well as her own thoughts and dreams to explore the nature of human perception and experience. By using everyday objects as subject matter—small animals, body parts, religious figurines, and other elements from the made and natural worlds—and altering them through unexpected shifts in scale, color, and materials, Fritsch evokes a sense of wonder and blurs the boundaries between the ordinary and the deeply symbolic.

Organized by the Walker, Katharina Fritsch: Multiples includes early examples from her student years at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie to later pieces, providing a look into her long-standing themes and ideas through some 40 works drawn from the Walker’s collection.

Katharina Fritsch was born in 1956 in Essen, Germany and lives and works in Düsseldorf. She has had many solo exhibitions including the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; Art Institute of Chicago; Kunsthaus Zürich; Deichtorhallen Hamburg; K21, Düsseldorf; Tate Modern, London; Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Basel; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Dia Center for the Arts, New York. Her work has also been included in numerous international group shows including the Venice Biennales of 1995 and 2011.

Burnet Galley and Mediatheque

On the opening day of the exhibition Katharina Fritsch: Multiples, join exhibition curators Pavel Pyś and Victoria Sung for an in-gallery talk. Then head to the Mediatheque for a guest presentation by Rachel Jans (Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) featuring an in-depth look at the multiples in the context of the artist’s larger practice. The first part will be at 6pm in the galleries, and the second, 6:30pm in the Mediatheque.
