Camelot Returns to Chanhassen Dinner Theatres

CAMELOT RETURNS TO THE MAIN STAGE AT CHANHASSEN DINNER THEATRES
A classic returns for the first time in 15 years
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (CDT) is pleased to announce it is producing Lerner & Loewe’s CAMELOT, the American Musical Theatre classic, as its next Main Stage production. CAMELOT returns for the first time in more than 15 years. Preview performances run from September 30th - October 6th with official opening night on Friday, October 7th.
CAMELOT was written by Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music), (My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Gigi ) and is based on the story of King Arthur and his knights adapted from T.H. White’s novel, The Once and Future King. A multi Tony Award-winner, including one for best score, with popular songs such as: “Camelot,” “The Lusty Month of May,” “If Ever I Would Leave You” and “I Wonder What the King Is Doing Tonight.” It ran for 873 performances on Broadway, along with spawning the Academy Award-winning film adaptation in 1967.
During medieval times in the idyllic land of Camelot, Arthur rules as a wise, compassionate king who dreams of building the greatest kingdom the world has ever known, one in which knowledge and wit reign supreme over brute force. Guenevere, Arthur's beloved queen, encourages Arthur to establish the Knights of the Round Table. As the Knights and their chivalry grow in fame, the dashing Lancelot arrives in Camelot and a deep bond unites the three. But all is not well in Camelot where secrets and friction begin to emerge. Merlin warns Arthur of impending plots. Schemes to thwart the throne and ultimate betrayal challenge Arthur’s dreams. Can Camelot be saved?
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres’ Artistic Director Michael Brindisi is particularly fond of this beloved classic. He stated, “I love this play because it's so emotionally packed. At its core it's about passion: Arthur's passion for ideas, Guenevere and Lancelot's passion for romance, and their shared passion for Arthur and his dreams. It's very big very complicated.” In the end there’s a powerful and relevant message for the audience. Brindisi continued, “It’s about all of our dreams and aspirations for a perfect world, even if only ‘one brief shining moment.’”
CAMELOT will run through Saturday, February 25th, 2017. It will be performed eight times weekly with evening performances Tuesdays through Saturday at 8pm, and matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1pm, and Sundays at 6:30pm. Dinner and show ticket prices: Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday evenings $75; Friday $85; Saturday evening $85; Wednesday matinees $65 and Saturday matinees $68; and Sunday $80.
