Could Minneapolis Be An Olympic Host City?

Edgar Linares of WCCO radio asked us this question as the XXXI Olympiad began last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We will certainly have to wait our turn until at least 2028, since candidate cities for the 2024 Olympics have already been narrowed down. The cities are Rome, Los Angeles, Budapest and Paris. As a reminder, Boston was the original U.S. candidate city. Based on the extensive obligations associated with hosting an Olympics, Boston withdrew its candidacy and 1984 Olympics host city Los Angeles stepped up to fill the void. The 2024 selection is expected by September of 2017.

An Olympics would need to be a statewide effort because of the massive financial and logistical requirements. But in addition to our big major events wins so far, we must also be mindful of our current Minnesota World Expo bid for 2023.

Our community will have all the credentials and practice needed to step up for an Olympics in the future. Could Minneapolis be an Olympics city? The answer is yes, but at the right time. We've got a pretty full plate now. Enjoy Edgar's story here.
