As the capital of Heilongjiang Province, Harbin is the economic, political, and cultural center of the northern part of Northeast China. The city covers a total area of 53,100 square kilometers and includes 9 districts and 9 counties, with a permanent population of approximately 9.33 million. Harbin has a long history and is known as a city that never had city walls. Human activity in the area dates back more than 22,000 years to the late Paleolithic Era. The region was also the birthplace of both the Jin Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. Harbin’s modern development began with the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1896, which spurred the concentration of industries, commerce, and population in the city. By the early twentieth century, Harbin had developed into a prominent international trading hub, attracting about 160,000 overseas residents from 33 countries and hosting consulates from 19 nations. Harbin was liberated in 1945, and on April 28, 1946, it officially established a people’s government, becoming China’s first major city to achieve liberation.
Due to its special historical background and geographical location, Harbin has long been a place where Eastern and Western cultures meet. The city has earned titles such as “Music City,” “Capital of East Asian Culture,” “City of World Architecture Museum,” and “City of Olympic Champions.” Its distinctive European-style architecture has also led to the nicknames “Oriental Moscow” and “Eastern Paris.”
