#18 Walker Art Center

#18 of 52 Must See Things in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center has finally reopened, after being closed for more than a year during a complete renovation. A new entry pavilion for the Walker, reconstruction of the garden, more than 100 new trees and 19 new art pieces are just some of the updates you can expect to find.

While we love the Sculpture Garden, we can’t forget about all of the incredible happenings inside the museum itself. The Walker Art Center is one of the top five most visited modern and contemporary art museums in the country, and for good reason. Five exhibitions are currently on display, with 10 more coming up this year. They also offer classes and workshops, lectures, special performances and screenings. There’s always something to do and more to see at the Walker, compelling us to plan our next trip on the way out the door. Plus, admission to the gallery is free every Thursday from 5 – 9 p.m. and every first Saturday of the month. Free entertainment has never looked so good!

If you’re looking to really make an even bigger event out of your trip to the Walker, check out Esker Grove, the new restaurant on the main level adjacent to the entrance that’s already earned a James Beard Foundation nomination for Best New Restaurant. A large, glass wall, modern décor and an outstanding menu by esteemed chef Doug Flicker make Esker Grove a foodie’s dream and much more than a “museum restaurant” – this spot is a destination in itself! Stop by for a cocktail and apps or check out their dinner menu for some serious eats. Oh…and they have brunch! Need we say more?
