Architecture In the City

In Minneapolis, walls aren’t just walls. We like to bend them, shape them, and sometimes even mix and match what we make them out of. History blends with innovation, so come check out some of the most unique structures in the nation.

Morning
Take in breakfast at Key’s in the historic Foshay Tower, which was once the tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi and is now the W Hotel. Next, stroll down to the Minneapolis Central Library. Designed by Cesar Pelli, the facility is composed primarily of transparent and translucent glass, with Minnesota-themed accents. While you’re there, take a free tour. If you’re more in to more historical architecture, hit up the Wells Fargo Center: also designed by Cesar Pelli, the building opened its doors in 1989 (over 20 years ago)! Inside, you’ll find the Wells Fargo History Museum where you can learn about the bank’s history (chock full of intrigue, wild west robberies, etc).

Afternoon
Head down to the Walker Art Center. A 2005 addition to the museum designed by Herzog & de Meuron doubled the size of the complex. After you’re through there, take in a little sculpture just a few steps away (and for free) at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

Evening
Take in a show at the Tony Award-winning Guthrie Theater—filling an amazing structure (The New York Times calls it a “21st century dream factory”). Designed by Jean Nouvel, the building has three separate theater stages, numerous bars, a restaurant and an “endless bridge” that offers spectacular river views. When you're done, have a bite at the ever-organic Spoonriver restaurant.
