Minneapolis: Green City

It's easy to go green in Minneapolis—in landscape and in practice. As an environmentally progressive city with 22 lakes and over 170 parks, it doesn't get much greener than this. Love to bask in the city and soak in nature? Passionate about environmental issues? Experience it all in our green city.

Green + Glass

Minneapolis is an urban forest, a city with a unique twist. We're not comprised solely of more than glass and steel—we’re eco-conscious. We appreciate an unexpected abundance of parks, lakes and natural spaces. Miles of paths – Nearly 200 miles of recreational paths wind through the metro area, including:

  • Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway – Unique to Minnesota.
  • Cedar Lake Regional Trail – First bicycle freeway in the nation.
  • Parks for all – Every Minneapolis resident lives within six blocks of a park.
  • Nation’s largest urban sculpture garden – Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

Walking the Walk

Minneapolis is a national leader in environmental stewardship. We're committed to enriching the environment, examining our resources and pursuing innovative solutions. Residents and visitors take pride in the city's progressive environmental efforts.

  • Green city vehicles—We're turning our city vehicle fleet green by adding flex-fuel vehicles (running on 85 percent ethanol fuel) and hybrid-electric vehicles.
  • Rewards for thinking green—In 2007, Minneapolis began awarding micro-grants to motivate residents and businesses in efforts to reduce global warming.
  • LEED the way—Minneapolis supports the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
  • Rethinking America's favorite pastime—The new Minnesota Twins ballpark will be the first LEED-certified major league baseball stadium in the country.
  • Travel + Leisure ranked Minneapolis the cleanest, 3rd-most friendly, 2nd-most intelligent and 2nd-best for parks (November 2007).
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Minneapolis the Clean Air Excellence Award for our air quality improvements.
  • Forbes ranked Minneapolis the fifth cleanest city in the world (May 2007).
  • Country Home magazine's Best Green Places study ranked Minneapolis the eighth greenest metro area in the country (March 2008).
