Discover Nicollet Mall, downtown’s main 11-block thoroughfare. The clean, welcoming street is a doorway to some of the best restaurants, shopping, entertainment and hotels in town. Here’s just a few things you’ll find:
Leading classical and pop music stars perform year-round at the acoustically-perfect Orchestra Hall. It’s also the home of the Minnesota Orchestra, which, led by Director Osmo Vänskä, has drawn extraordinary reviews for concerts both at home and abroad. Outside, Peavey Plaza offers an area to relax and take in music in the summertime (and to skate in the winter)!
One of the most beloved bars in the city, Brit’s is a mingling ground for everyone, young and old, businessman or not. In the summer, lawn bowling on the roof is a can’t-miss.
One of the city’s premiere restaurants. Although it serves some fancy French cuisine, it also has amazing deals—like the happy hour Vincent hamburger (stocked with pork and gouda).
Minneapolis has the fourth biggest jazz scene in the nation, and this is probably why. A perfect venue to see stars and up-and-comers, the Dakota also is known for serving some of the best grub in town.
(May-October) Every Thursday, Nicollet Mall comes alive with fresh fruits, vegetables, organic goods and more. Bring your reusable bag and get in on the fun.
Known for selling the most Jameson whiskey in the world, this Irish bar has is dimmed and usually filled to the brim.
Voted the hottest new restaurant of 2009, Barrio offers small, fresh plates, premium tequila and drop-over-dead-for margaritas. It’s also a great place to spend later night hours.
Once Dayton’s (and then Marshall Fields) this downtown shopping center has long held the heart of the city. Special events, like its 8th floor holiday showcase and spring flower show, make it a must-see.
Gaviidae Common on 6th and Nicollet is your one-stop shop for upscale downtown shopping. The complex features Neiman Marcus, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Morton's of Chicago Steakhouse and more.
Designed by Cesar Pelli, this gem marks the north end of Nicollet Mall. The building’s stunning architecture (worth a tour in itself) is matched by the wealth inside—it holds the third largest per capita library collection of any major U.S. city.
Nicollet Mall, a 11-block thoroughfare with traffic limited to service vehicles and pedestrians, was the second downtown pedestrian mall in the country.

Dynamic Culture
"[minneapolis], too, is a theater, a vast unstable laboratory that is constantly being reshaped by economic, political and imaginative forces. Seldom does that reality seem this seductive." New York Times, 2006
