Guthrie 2013 Fall Multiweek Classes Open for Registration

Classes begin September 3 and continue through December 21


(Minneapolis/St. Paul) Those wishing to be inspired and gain skills ranging from creative movement to voice training this fall have a perfect opportunity at the Guthrie. With uniquely gifted instructors and a wide range of offerings the 2013 Fall Multiweek Classes are an ideal way to ignite skills and passions through exciting classes.


Classes begin September 3 and continue through December 21. Classes run in four, six, eight and 12-week sessions. All levels are welcome. Complete class information including schedules, teaching artists’ bios and registration information is available at


Guthrie classes are taught by an impressive roster of teaching artists. Guthrie 2013 Fall Multiweek Classes teaching artists are Candace Barrett, James Cada, Steve Cardamone, Paul De Cordova, Laura Esping, Michelle Hutchison, Mira Kehoe, Kate Lawrence, Aaron Preusse, Jan Puffer, D'Arcy Smith, Dario Tangelson, and Andrea Tutt.  





With class offerings running the gamut from Tap Dance to Speech, Guthrie fall classes provide discovery, learning and excitement for adults interested in participating in theater as well as those looking for a distinct seasonal experience this fall.

Level 1 Acting: Spontaneous Creativity

Expand your creativity and build on the groundwork laid in Level 1 Acting: Intro to Acting. In this interactive and engaging class you will hone skills of spontaneity and improvisation while focusing on the three essential actor tools -- the voice, the body and, most importantly, the imagination.

Level 2 Acting

If you were bitten by the acting bug in the Level 1 Acting, this next level is perfect for you! Continue your acting curiosity by building a strong foundation of skills. This class will strengthen your imagination, focus your concentration and hone your listening skills by delving into the creation of original and scripted characters. This class is designed for those who want to move beyond the basics.



Level 3 Acting

Tuesdays, November 12 - December 17, 2013

6:30 - 9:30 p.m. | $275


Take the words from the page and make them real. Words are the way. Building on the foundation and skills developed in Level 1 and Level 2 Acting, this class will delve into the creative, complex and amazing world of the script. Learn how to identify and activate textual clues to enhance storytelling, spark actions, build characters, define relationships and, ultimately, engage an audience. Over the course of six weeks, you will examine various scripts and learn the way professionals explore, dig in and make the story come to life!


Level 4 Acting

This course will be offered in winter 2014. Dates and times to be announced.



Deepen your knowledge of the play by incorporating character development, script analysis, memorization, rehearsal techniques and working with props and costumes to expand your understanding of the actor's role in specificity and personalization. Scene work will include modern and contemporary plays as well as various period work, including Shakespeare. Guest artists may be invited to teach as interest and demand for specific scene work emerges. The nine weeks will culminate in a final presentation for friends and family.


Level 5 Acting: Studio Intensive

This 8-week advanced acting course will help you delve further into your personal acting challenges, enhance your strengths, face your weaknesses and overcome creative blockages. The work will center on scene study or monologues from a wide variety of styles, periods and playwrights as well as specialized theatrical techniques. Step by step, students will be guided towards committed, connected and dynamic performances. The eight weeks will culminate in a final presentation for friends and family.

Have you always wanted to tap dance but didn't know where to start? Then join us at the Guthrie for a fun and invigorating class designed to introduce you to the basics of tap dancing, from a shuffle, to a brush, to a flap. No experience necessary! Tap shoes required.


Level 2 Tap Dance

If you've mastered the shuffle ball change and are ready to learn the Shim Sham, join us for Level 2 Tap Dance where you'll learn time steps, maxifords, Irishes and how to buffalo. It's fun and a great workout, too! Knowledge of basic tap steps is required for this class. Tap shoes required.


Level 1 Dance for Musical Theater

Experience dance to the beat of musical theater! In Dance for Musical Theater, you'll explore the basics of various dance styles, including tap, jazz, ballet and modern, as well as acting in relation to movement. Each class begins with a physical warm up, to prepare the body for energetic movement and to provide an understanding of body placement, dance vocabulary and style. This is a safe, supportive environment for fun-loving adults who are interested in trying a class that gets them up on their feet, moving and grooving!

Learn the secrets of Stage Combat from an experienced Guthrie Teaching Artist. Slap, punch and kick without hurting anyone -- just like actors do it on stage! It looks real, but it's just pretend. No experience necessary!




Presentation Skills

Great public speakers are made not born. Acting and communication skills training can be combined to make you a better speaker. Learn the critical skill set required, and how to develop and master those skills. Discover methods for preparing your presentation, tips on how to handle a variety of performance spaces and other nerve-wracking challenges, as well as a logical sequence of vocal warm ups and techniques to make your presentation flawless.

This class is the perfect fit for those serious about pursuing the industry of voiceover. This class will focus on handling anxiety, voiceover audition etiquette, self-promotion and copy analysis. Visit with guest artists and get the "inside scoop" from some of the leading players in the industry. The class will culminate in the opportunity to practice and record in the Guthrie's private recording studio.

Level 1 Voice and Speech

Do you desire to be heard? To keep your listener engaged? To be more easily understood? This class will help you develop the skills to become a more effective speaker. Through exercises, discussions and practical application, participants will discover how to speak with a motivating, inspiring and commanding voice.


The GUTHRIE THEATER (Joe Dowling, Director) was founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963 and is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training. The Tony Award-winning Guthrie Theater is dedicated to producing the great works of dramatic literature, developing the work of contemporary playwrights and cultivating the next generation of theater artists.
