Tickets Go On Sale at Noon on Friday, April 26
MINNEAPOLIS—Merle Haggard, often considered the single most influential singer/songwriter in country music history, will make a special appearance with his longtime band the Strangers at Hennepin Theatre Trust’s State Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013. This return Minneapolis engagement follows Haggard’s sold-out concert with Kris Kristofferson in July 2012 at the State Theatre. An opening act will be announced later. Tickets go on sale at Noon on Friday, April 26. To purchase tickets or for more information, please visit www.HennepinTheatreTrust.org or call 1.800.982.2787.
For country music devotees, Merle Haggard’s legendary craftsmanship recognizes the artist as a consummate troubadour who has carved his niche as a gifted singer/songwriter through memorable tunes including “Mama Tried,” “Okie from Muskogee” and “Shipwrecked in the Eighties.” Born in Depression-era Bakersfield to migrant parents from Oklahoma, he became known as “the poet of the common man” and has long set a standard for country singers. Spanning nearly four decades of award-winning music filled with a Grammy winner and numerous chart-topping singles, his dedication to American music helped inspire three-time Grammy Award-winner Kris Kristofferson’s career.
He was elected to the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1977, the Country Hall of Fame in 1994, received Kennedy Center Honors in 2010 and was selected as #77 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 100 artists of all time. His latest album, “Working in Tennessee,” was released in 2011 and is a collection of self-penned Haggard tunes plus classics made famous by Johnny Cash, as well as a new version of his stalwart “Working Man Blues” featuring Willie Nelson and his son Ben Haggard. He continues to tour vigorously throughout 2013 with stops throughout the United States and Canada.
