On June 22, join the Guthrie for a theaterwide gala fundraiser that includes two distinctive dinners and BEHOLD—a one-night-only performance on the Wurtele Thrust Stage co-hosted by Greta Oglesby and Sally Wingert and featuring Tracie Bennett, Daniel Gerroll, Whoopi Goldberg, T.R. Knight, Patricia Kalember and male vocal ensemble Cantus among others. On June 23, participate in a FREE Community Celebration Day with family-friendly activities for all ages including backstage tours, performances, free classes, a retrospective film and a costume promenade.

(Minneapolis/St. Paul) On May 7, 2013, the Guthrie marks 50 years as a world-class theater with the official celebration taking place the weekend of June 22-23. This special weekend offers a variety of activities beginning with a theaterwide gala featuring two distinctive dinners, a one-night-only performance, a champagne reception and dance party; and culminating with a Free Community Celebration Day during which the Guthrie will open its doors to provide all-ages activities in and around the theater with behind-the-scenes access to the theater’s inner workings.

 

50th Season Celebration Events

 

Saturday, June 22, 2013

 

Golden Soirée

The Golden Soirée will be a dinner open to 120 guests, beginning with a cocktail party on the set of Clybourne Park on the McGuire Proscenium Stage followed by dinner in the Dowling Studio with a five-course menu by James Beard Award-winning Chef Tim McKee. The event features live jazz by the notable Pete Whitman Trio and a live auction hosted by actor Mark Benninghofen boasting five one-of-a-kind theatrical experiences. Guests will also receive premium tickets to the gala performance on the Wurtele Thrust Stage with a champagne reception and live music post-show. Guests may also attend the Dance Party in the Dowling Studio; tickets for the Golden Soiree are $5,000 per person ($4,600 tax-deductible contribution) and are on sale now by calling 612.225.6350.

 

Fête 50

Fête 50 will be a dinner party for 750 guests on Levels Four and Five and the Endless Bridge; featuring dining stations, hors d’oeuvres and small plates with signature cocktails, select wines and more. Guests will attend the gala performance on the Wurtele Thrust, a champagne reception with live music on Level Four, and may attend the Dance Party in the Dowling Studio. Tickets for Fête 50 are $500 per person ($275 tax-deductible contribution) and are on sale now by calling 612.225.6350.

 

BEHOLD: A Gala Performance

As previously announced, BEHOLD: A Gala Performance will be co-hosted by Guthrie favorites Greta Oglesby and Sally Wingert, and will feature Tracie Bennett, Daniel Gerroll, Whoopi Goldberg, Patricia Kalember, T.R. Knight and male vocal ensemble Cantus among others. BEHOLD has musical direction by Andrew Cooke, choreography by Brian Sostek and is written by Mark Benninghofen. Peter Flynn—whose extensive credits include directorial work on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theaters and other gala events—will direct. Further information about artists and guests appearing in BEHOLD will be announced in the weeks to come.

 

A star-studded performance featuring actors, composers and writers with ties to the Guthrie’s past and future, BEHOLD: A Gala Performance will be held on June 22, 2013, on the Wurtele Thrust Stage. BEHOLD will be presented in conjunction with Anniversary Weekend celebration dinners the Golden Soirée and Fête 50, which will include tickets to the performance and are on sale now through the Guthrie’s Anniversary Line at 612.225.6350.

FREE Community Celebration Day

The Guthrie will open its doors to the public on Sunday with a range of free offerings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for longtime theater lovers, first-time visitors, children and their parents. Activities in and around the theater will represent the scope of community involvement available to the public throughout the year, including:

 

  • Sampler classes for kids, including physical comedy, stage combat, tap dance, singing and storytelling
  • Sampler classes for adults, including voiceover, playwriting and presentation skills
  • A behind-the-scenes backstage walking tour
  • A family-friendly performance of Milly and Tillie by Minneapolis’ Open Eye Figure Theatre
  • Talks on Guthrie history and an all-day retrospective 50-year slideshow
  • A costume promenade featuring historical pieces
  • A 5K run highlighting the beauty of the Mississippi River
  • Special involvement by neighborhood partners such as the Mill City Farmers Market, the Mill City Museum, among others.
  • Hair coloring by Kids' Hair and face painting by Funtime Funktions
  • Food samples by Sea Change
