MINNEAPOLIS—Gordon Lightfoot, the legendary Canadian baritone known for such enduring hits as “Sundown” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” brings his “50 Years on the Carefree Highway Tour” to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s State Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013. With his extensive musical career, Lightfoot was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. His new tour will feature well known hits as well as some deep album cuts interspersed with the renowned singer/songwriter’s personal behind-the-scenes anecdotes about his long career. Gordon Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums and has earned five Grammy nominations. Most recently, he released “All Live,” recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, in April 2012. His radio hits in the United States alone have earned five number ones, five Top 10s and thirteen Top 40 hits. His vast song catalog includes such immortal works as “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway” and “(That’s What You Get) For Lovin’ Me.” The internationally successful musician helped define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s and his songs have been recorded by artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Peter, Paul and Mary and Harry Belafonte.
In his native Canada, Lightfoot was made a 2003 Companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor. He has won 17 Juno Awards (Canada’s equivalent to the Grammys), received a place on Canada’s Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Perhaps Canada’s most prolific singer/songwriter, he was also honored in 2007 with an official Gordon Lightfoot postage stamp.
