Originally from Detroit, Diana Ross rose to prominence with the supergroup The Supremes, with their groundbreaking polished style bridging the worlds of pop and soul and becoming the sound of America in the 1960s. With Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Since launching a solo career in 1970, Diana Ross has claimed a throne as a worldwide icon, winning nearly every award imaginable–a special Tony Award in 1977 for her one woman show An Evening with Diana Ross, Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012.
Arguably the biggest hit of her solo career was “Endless Love,” a 1981 duet with Lionel Richie from the movie of the same name. The multi-talented entertainer was also nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Billie Holliday in 1972’s “Lady Sings the Blues.” She is one of the few recording artists to have two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one as a solo artist and another as a member of The Supremes. She published her autobiography, “Secrets of a Sparrow,” in 1994. Ross has influenced artists from Michael Jackson to Beyoncé Knowles and remains a queen in the American entertainment industry.
