MINNEAPOLIS—Billy Collins, the acclaimed American writer who served as United States Poet Laureate from 2001-2003, will visit Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Pantages Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013. Collins, whose last three collections have broken sales records for poetry, has managed to combine high critical acclaim with broad popular appeal. His delightful and accessible style draws people of all ages and backgrounds to his standing room only readings. In Minneapolis, he will read selections from a variety of his work with an emphasis on his new book, “Aimless Love: New and Selected Poems 2003-2013,” to be released in October 2013. He will also take questions from the audience and participate in a book signing. Collins will also appear as a guest on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” at the State Theatre on Saturday, November 2, the night after his Pantages event. Collins’s work has been published in a variety of periodicals including “The New Yorker,” “The Paris Review” and “The American Scholar.” He is a Guggenheim fellow, a New York Public Library “Literary Lion” and he has also appeared many times on National Public Radio. He has published eight collections of poetry, including “Questions About Angels,” “The Art of Drowning,” “Picnic,” “Lightning,” “Taking Off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes,” “Sailing Alone Around the Room: New & Selected Poems,” “Nine Horses,” “The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems,” “Ballistics,” and most recently, “Horoscopes for the Dead.”
He has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He has also been awarded the Oscar Bluenthal Prize, the Bess Hokin Prize, the Frederick Bock Prize and the Levinson Prize by Poetry Magazine. In October 2004, Collins was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Mark Twain Prize for Humor in Poetry.
