Oakmont Country Club to Host 2010 U.S. Women’s Open
Oakmont Country Club will again host one of the United States Golf Association’s 13 national championships when the U.S. Women’s Open is played on the famed course from July 5-11, 2010.
The U.S. Women’s Open will be the 15th USGA championship contested at the club, with the most recent being the 2007 U.S. Open won by Angel Cabrera. Oakmont’s relationship with the USGA began in 1919 with the U.S. Amateur. Since then, it has been home to the Amateur four other times, the U.S. Open eight times and the U.S. Women’s Open in 1992.
“The popularity of women’s golf has grown exponentially in recent years due in large part to the personalities on the LPGA Tour,” explained Carol Semple Thompson, general chairperson and 2008 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee. “We view the U.S. Women’s Open as a great opportunity to showcase these talents as well as grow our relationship with the USGA and Oakmont’s rich tradition of championship golf.”
The U.S. Women’s Open will celebrate its 65th year in 2010. Some of golf’s greatest players have added their names to the U.S. Women’s Open Championship Cup, including Babe Didrikson Zaharias, winner of the 1948, 1950 and 1954 championships, and Annika Sorenstam, winner of the 1995, 1996 and 2006 championships.
The local organizing committee, lead by Thompson, is currently in place at Oakmont Country Club. The group’s mission over the next several months is to introduce the Women’s Open to the community with a focus on corporate hospitality sales. The recruitment of 3,000 volunteers will begin in the fall of 2008. Tickets to the championship will go on sale in May 2009.
