Backstage Tours

A backstage tour offers a look at what goes on behind the scenes at the Guthrie. You'll discover the stunning and expanded features of our state-of-the-art facility and learn how we take our plays from script to stage, including the many intriguing steps in between. On the tour, you'll visit our various production departments, including the shops where costumes, sets and props are expertly crafted by talented artisans.

45-minute backstage tours are scheduled on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings at 10 a.m. as well as after selected weekend matinees.

The cost is $10 per person; $6 for subscribers, students or seniors. To book a tour, call the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224 or order online.

Additional tours may be scheduled for groups of 20 or more based on availability. Groups may call our group sales office at 612.225.6240 for information and scheduling options. Advance reservations are required for groups of 20 or more.

Self-guided Audio Tours

Self-guided audio tours through all of our facility's public spaces are available whenever the box office is open.

Narrated by Joe Dowling and familiar Guthrie actors, this fascinating experience will tell you about our theater's history and the building's design, highlighting many points of interest.

The cost is $5 per person, and iPods are available for rental at the Guthrie Box Office.


Architectural Tours

Architectural tours of the Guthrie focus on the history of the project, the site and its neighborhood and technical information about specific features of the building. Devised by Leslie Van Duzer, associate professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, these private tours can be scheduled with advance reservation.

Architectural tours are approximately 75 minutes in length, and can be scheduled by calling Lily at 612.225.6172.

CostumeRentals Tours

Tours of the rental facility can be arranged (for a nominal fee) for any class: History - explore clothing from different time periods. English - have your students dress up as the characters they study. Art and Design - see textiles and accessories as well as clothing design and construction techniques. Productions and Projects - use our costumes in your school productions and class projects.
